Jin-Roh

Post by GreenT » Thu Jan 20, 2005 9:57 pm

I just finished watching Jin-Roh, and thought it was a really good movie. But as soon as it ended, I thought, "wtf? that's the ending?!"

As I was watching the movie, I didn't understand much of it at first, and when it ended, I still didn't understand much of it...

So, could someone please give me a description on what the story is about? I would highly appreaciate.

How do I say it.... the story is several things....

One, it is an alternate retelling of the fairy tale Red Riding Hood... the old version, where the wolf eats the little girl - the end.

Two, it is an alternate tale of post-war Japan in the 1950's...Japan was far from a quiet place at the time... the society was convulsing as it moved from a rural to an urban society... unemployment was rampent... student radicals clashed in the streets... I think during this time a prime minster candidate was killed on TV during a debate.... All of the weapons employed by the special tactic units are German WWII vintage....MG42 machine guns.. helmets... vehicles.... stylistically... it is something that never existed....except in an alternate history..., but this is never made clear...

The Wolf's brigade is a unit that does....the necessary things to maintain the society... They do the things that are not appreciated to be talked about in the light of day, but their effects are appreciated... The government of course would like them to disappear as things come to an end, but such people are not easily oblige.

I'd go back and watch it a couple of times... it does hold up to repeat viewings. Were you asking why Kazuki Fuse does what he does, especially at the end? Fuse did love her...but his job was to eliminate terrorists... no matter what the circumstances... The movie focuses on how he handles the conflicting war in his head.... He is still a feeling emotional person who is trying to reconcile what he has to do and still maintain his humanity...

It's an interesting story....one shared by many cultures throughout history. Just about every government no matter how enlightened or open seems to have those people that "do the dirty work" that allows the rest to sleep well at night without thinking of danger.

Star Trek introduced "Section 31" as its group...America calls them "Black Ops".... they are things we wink and nod when we hear, but they do not exist "officially". Jin Roh does not put forth any answers....its not meant to....

Good explanation is in the synpsis from Greencine. http://www.greencine.com/webCatalog?id= ... nt=jin+Roh

Also Mamoru Oshii wrote the script and has actually directed a live action trilogy from which Jin Roh is based on. One is called Stray Dog. I forgot the other movies in the series. Anybody remember the other ones?

I think the central theme is about Fuse trying to sort out his life. His feelings of guilt over the suicide bomber, his love for the girl and his loyalty to his unit. He has to make a very hard choise, would you want to be in his shoes?
This anime is what got me into making amvs. It was the first one I did and I still think it fits the Doors song Question very well.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

I think one of the other ones is "Red Spectacles" or something to that extent.
