Clips in Video I didn't put after exporting

I'm sorry if this is already covered somewhere which I have a feeling it is. However, I can't find it anywhere. I searched the forums and no luck. I don't know how to describe the problem in the search engine...I can barely describe the problem here..

I would like to post my AMVs online, I usually export videos with HuffyYuv. Though, now I need a better codec so I use DivX MPEG-4 Fast Motion with a frame rate of 29.97. Whenever my video is done exporting I have all these "before clips" in scenes. For example, the actual scene in the series it shows Yuo standing in front of school. Then it zooms up and shows Yuo's eyes. I'll add just the part of Yuo's eyes in my video and that is all I see. However, whenever I export it right before this scene, for a split second it will show Yuo standing in front of a school before it goes to his eyes which is all I wanted. This happens all throughout my video. It shows for a split second a frame before the frame I actually put in the Timeline.

1) What format/codec are your source clips? That may be part of the problem.

2) You shouldn't be exporting distro copies straight from your editing program... export in HuffYUV like you used to, then use something else (read: <a href="http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net">VirtualDubMod</a>) to compress it with your favorite distro codec. This <i>might</i> also be part of the problem. (If I'm misunderstanding and this is what you already do, I apologize.)

3) Why on earth are you still using DivX ?? Use DivX 5 or XviD...

if you try cutting the footage a frame later than you would have normally that may help, it may just be that your cuts are a frame early and your editor doesn't pick this up for some reason...

Thanks you two for the friendly replies, I was afraid of being cursed at for my ignorance. I've been making music videos for well over three years now, but have never tried to compress them for internet distribution. I just use the HuffyYuv codec to show my co-workers on my personal computer.

I used the guide provided on this site to do the AVS and D2V files with AVISynth. So, the format would be D2V when I'm finished and import into Premiere. Yes, that sounds about right...

Nope, I've never done this before. When I'm done with a video I go straight to exporting it. I did download VirtualDub a long time ago when the guide on this site told me to but I never figured out what I was supposed to do with it. Thanks for informing me and I'll go try that right now!

Oh, sorry, I had no idea there was something better. Most AMVs I download I see the "DivX logo" on them, so when I saw it in the codec options I thought, well it must be popular and DivX 4 sounded better than DivX 3 so I just went with it. Thanks for letting me know about DivX 5 and XviD I'm going to go check them out right now as well.

Zaphod_Beeblerox, stupid me I never even thought of that. Great suggestion and I really appreciate it. After I finish trying out all this stuff Scintilla told me about, and if I still can't get it to do what I want I'm definately going with your idea.

Are you using the Decomb plugin (Telecide and Decimate) in your AVISynth script? If so, you may be having the same problem as is mentioned here:

I don't know if there's an easy fix for this at the moment; probably the safest thing to do would be what Zaphod suggested, just moving the cuts over by a frame or two.

Yes, I use the Decomb plugin. It appears my problem is identical to the thread you posted. Too bad there isn't a solution for it, however, I went with Zaphod's suggestion of moving the clips over a couple of frames and it worked, thanks for that suggestion.

Thanks Scintilla for informing me about exporting in HuffYUV then using VirtualDubMod, I had no idea about those steps!

I just have two extremely simple questions now that I've finished my video. Excuse my ignorance.

Is 23MB really a bad size? Keep in mind I'm a dial up user so that's why I'm not too sure if this is a large size or not. Most of the videos I downlaod are around 10-19 in size. I've never had one above 20 before, so should I try and compress my vid a little more and just deal with bad quality? The resolution is 320x240 if that helps.

Finally, is an AVI format alright for people to download? I plan on putting this video on here as well as distributing it via email to some people. I know they'd have to have DivX installed inorder to view my AMV due to my using a DivX codec...but does an AVI require them to have Realplayer or something else installed? Most of the videos I download are WMV's that's why I ask this question.

There are no bad sizes, just bad size/quality tradeoffs.
I've seen a 23MB video that looked great despite being 3:37 long at 480x352 (I encoded it ), and I've seen 23 MB videos that looked horrible.

The majority of the videos I download are over 30MB or so, unless they're shorts and/or .WMVs. So from a downloading point of view (at least from mine), 23MB isn't bad at all. It's really up to you to decide whether you want it smaller.

Any media player that plays videos should be able to handle an AVI file as long as you've got a compatible codec installed. Windows Media Player will play them as well as RealPlayer will play them as well as Media Player Classic will play them as well as Xine.
