NPR Airs Segment About Anime

Post by Phade » Tue Feb 01, 2005 9:44 pm

Hey All,

To demonstrate the growing popularity of anime, the NPR radio show "Talf of the Nation" has aired a piece all about anime and manga. It's a very interesting bit and you can listen to it from their web site. Now even old fogies who don't watch TV now know all about anime. ;-)

Ah yes, I remember reading a couple posts about that in the ANN forums. Someone can't say "Gundam" right.

Thanks for the link i enjoyed that. :D

Not only did the guy say almost everything wrong (like G"oo"ndum) he also called me a comic book nerd  .

ok so maybe i am a little  .

I would have to say the lady from Colorado who ran Gimme Anime was the most knowledgable of all the callers. She knew what she was talking about. And i love that she mentioned Fruits Basket :D .

I find that the guy saying "...or not having a 12 year old around..." (it went something like that) being misinformative. Yes, I know many threads talk about anime and manga is not just for kids, actually, a lot is not suitable for kids at all. It's Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, and the other "popular" anime that make most people assume anime is just for kids. My favorite is anime that is funny, serious, and full of drama at the same time. Kids enjoy it too, but adults understand somethings kids don't. At least Emily at Gimme Anime understands this!

Ok, I'm rambling on about this. Some of my friends and family think anime or any animated tv show/movie is pointless and has no "feel" to it like live-action shows. They insist I watch CSI, NYPD Blue, (god forbid) American Idol, and etc. The reason I love anime/animated features is that the animated format allows you to create any story your imagination can think up. Live-action is limited compared to animation. As cool as Evangelion being live-action would be, it could never be the same. Additionally, most anime has bizzareness that would be impossible or just disturbing to see for real. Ahh...it felt good to get that off my back. And there was a caller from Minnesota, woot!

Thanks Phade for the link!

Well, that made some interesting listening.

Admittedly, I kind of listened to the first five mintes and then skipped to the call-in segment, but whatever.

I thinks it even more amazing that people listen to NPR.

Anubis is right about the misinformation. I don't think NGE or FLCL or Ghost in the Shell or Ninja Scroll or Samurai X or Armitage or ...well you get the idea are for kids.

Live anime is weird but movies based off anime are cool.
Heck, The Matrix is largely based of the original Ghost in the Shell, as well as, a few other anime.

As for live shows, what bunch of random junk. Not being pre-written or story boarded leads to some horrible plots. As do sudden ends to actors contracts when the season is extended. To hell with that.

And has anyone on American Idol been famous for more than a year?
Stupid wussy pop pansies without originality, we another guy like Kurt from Nirvana or GNR reunion.

Not as informative as I thought it could have been, but it was still alright. I hope that someone took the advice from the e-mail that was read at the end of the show.
Probably too busy to be here right now.

You know, i dl'ed the audio and listened.... and listened, and i wish i could swear very loudly at that guy who wrote the book, for his comments about Japanese people not accepting others. The thing is, the Japanese people are upset because we (American chauvanistic pigs) go to that country, mispronounce there language, misunderstand their point of view and establish our own level of ignorance. It is because we refuse to learn their language, that they have a right to consider all of us as stupid, ignorant, fools, and oh my god...

He just said gundam, i didn't think it would be that funny...
LOL
ROFLMAS
lol
Retakes seat, dear lord...

...Proves my point...
