Of course people use pirated stuff. Its not the right think to do, but everyone has there own value system. For me, i made amends of my pirated video/audio days by going out and spending money on the things ive previously used and plan to use for the future of my amv's.
Also, I highly doubt that you will ever get a penny from anyone. I did a CPU donation for myself when i was currently unemployed because my CPU died, and I asked for $500 and nobody out of the 6 billion plus people on the planet donated anything. So asking for $1000 is really going to get you nowhere, unless your the leader of some big bandwagon on the org or something.
Good luck finding a job, especially since the holiday rush is well done with. I was seasonal, so I am currently unemployed as well.
