Forgot to mention something.

Ever notice that metalheads have to say one thing is bad to call something else good.

This is why low unity exists in metal fans. Perhaps this is why metal will always get that small forsaken corner in the music store. damn

Kurt is not easy for most to understand.

Plus Nirvana is grunge and MTV would have you believe that grunge killed metal.

The truth is that drugs and band break ups temporarily took metal from the public eye. Those that like it know its still here. Besides metal does not need MTV for advertisement because than fans just know. Metal and grunge partied together really.

I suppose Nirvana did hurt the glam bands, but even some metal bands (GNR) hurt those types of bands.

Metalheads should attack bands in non-hard rock categories for being overrated....Creed......Blink 182......big list.

Besides KISS is really the all time overrated metal band. It was more about the metal show than the metal music. (Damn good show though.)

I would think it difficult to write while on drugs.

Take the song Lithium. There is a ton of meaning in the lyrics.
At least if you know what lithium is used for.

The song Dumb too. And Heart Shaped Box. and Polly. Sliver tells a story.
Don't forget About a Girl, Come as You Are, Been A Son, Pennyroyal Tea (less complex), and All Apologies. A great deal of the others are story tellers.

So tell me Umbrellacompany what's your favorite Metallica album?

Pft. No, the only meaning that is there is because *we* put it there. It's really obscure, so people like to say it's artistic and metaphorical and all that stupid shit. But really people just add stuff because they aren't sure what it means but they like to seem intelligent so they add their own meaning and that meaning takes credit because other people flock in their own ignorance.

That is the core of pop culture.

Umbrellacompany take note of the arrogance of people on this site.
However not everyone is like us so keep posting to find nice people.

People grow dumber by the second and more opinionated by the minute.

Well Flint here it is:

Did you not ever wonder why call the song Lithium?

Lithium is a powerful antidepressant.

Unfortunately it has a 50ED/50LD. In other words an effective dose for 50% of those treated is a lethal does for the other 50%.

Antidepressants contrary to popular belief do NOT make you happy. They simply make you not depressed, as vague as that is.

Meaning:
The song is about feeling nothing as a result of a false chemical state of mind. Its about cracking up from an indifferent state of being. Instead of dealing with your problems they're buried in prescription drugs. Lifes sucks, but you simply dont care.

Note the whole Yeah.....who cares attitude of indifference in the lyrics.

Here are the lyrics to Lithium:

I'm so happy 'cause today
I've found my friends ...
They're in my head
I'm so ugly, but that's okay, 'cause so are you ...
We've broken our mirrors
Sunday morning is everyday for all I care ...
And I'm not scared
Light my candles, in a daze
'Cause I've found god
Yeah(x6)

I'm so lonely, but that's okay, I shaved my head ...
And I'm not sad
And just maybe I'm to blame for all I've heard ...
But I'm not sure
I'm so excited, I can't wait to meet you there ...
But I don't care
I'm so horny, but that's okay ...
My will is good
Yeah (x6)

(x2)
I like it - I'm not gonna crack
I miss you - I'm not gonna crack
I love you - I'm not gonna crack
I killed you - I'm not gonna crack

I'm so happy 'cause today
I've found my friends ...
They're in my head
I'm so ugly, but that's okay, 'cause so are you ...
We've broken our mirrors
Sunday morning is everyday for all I care ...
And I'm not scared
Light my candles in a daze ...
'Cause I've found god
Yeah (x6)

(x2)
I like it - I'm not gonna crack
I miss you - I'm not gonna crack
I love you - I'm not gonna crack
I killed you - I'm not gonna crack

Kurt was an artist. Its too much to expect everyone to get it. Of course if everyone did it would not be as unique.
Its a crux really.

Yeah, that is so not profound that I wonder why you even try to defend it. I know that song well, as well as I know the rest of their music. Which is, I tell you, pretty well. And you completely missed my point, which is that the fans make their own meaning from the music. Have you ever written or created anything poetic in your life?

I can write about drugs and use obscure poetic language with some vague metaphors but would you call me a genius? Fuck no.

The crowds ate up Nirvana and grunge in general because it's what our generation was looking for. It was a spontaneous musical evolution, and it's not uncommon but it creates fans like spores from fungus. You can hail him as a genius because he's dead and there can be no more evidence otherwise, but I'm not going to eat it up.

But of course that means I MUST NOT GET IT. Whatever, man. Think whatever you want if it makes your music more sacred.

This is a forum for Metallica so I will say only this much more on Nirvana.

First I liked Nirvana while Kurt was alive. Before the drugs too.

Second Plenty of Metal was just as dark and obscure as Nirvana.

Third I don't give a damn what fans thought, I seek to know the real meaning.

Finally what made him an artist was his art combined with his attitude. The man was no sell out. He had vision and he made it. He never sold out to popularity or sacrificed his ideas for higher sales. Hell he lived in his car during the first album release.

The man changed a whole section of music with several albums in just a few years. Many bands today reflect what Nirvana pioneered. But what made Nirvana different is that they set the bar by being original. Death is irrelevant without the life that preceeded it. I prefer to focus on what he did while alive not that he is a fallen artist.

Oh, and if you wrote something great, original, and pushed hard enough to make something of it. Yes that can make you an artistic genius.
