I would recommend X (the series, not the movie because the movie sucks). The plot line is great and the animation is just gorgeous. Angel Sactuary is really good, but it is pretty twisted and it ends in a weird spot. I second the recommendation of Wolf's Rain, because it is awesome! If you like pure strangeness then Excel Saga and Serial Experiments: Lain.

It seems like you're into the action packed-stuff. So I suggest Gunsmith Cats, an anime about butt-kicking female private dicks (aka private detectives, I just felt like using the synonym). And I also reccomend Noir, a show about two femme fatales...cold-blooded killers. Assasins, and they're good at their job.

Ok.
It was inevitable: the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.

Try Martian Succesor Nadesico, plenty of humor and space and mecha battles. Another good one is Full Metal Panic, again lots of humor and mecha battles, beside the cute girls. :) Gasaraki is good if you like an action series that is more on the serious side.
For mind benders try Serial Experiments Lain or Boogipop Phantom.
So many more that are great anime that it is hard to list them. Try searching on google for info on any anime that you think sound interesting. There is plenty of info on most animes on the market.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

I would recomend "Last Exile" its got great character development good plot and it is very well animated. Its one of the top 5 anime I've seen. But its unpopular and way underated so it might hard to find.
