Looking for Violations of the Single Parent Rule

Post by derobert » Thu Feb 17, 2005 10:37 pm

Single Parent Rule

The rule in anime and (Japanese?) video games that any main character who goes off adventuring, especially heroically, may not have both parents alive and present at the start of the series/game, or that at least one must die very shortly after the start.

I'm looking for a violation --- that is, a main character who despite going on an adventure to save the world has both parents alive and around. The bigger the violation, the better.

I plan to put this to use at Anime Parliament tomorrow. Thank you in advance for any help.

Golden Sun comes to mind (you may mention the death at the beginning, but I've played through game 2).

Does Crest of the Stars qualift? Both of Jinto's parents are alive.

Golden Sun is technically a violation... However, it goes with the spirit of the rule.

Haven't seen Crest of the Stars, so I can't comment. Or use it, unfortunately...

Crest of the Stars doesn't qualify; Jinto's mother is dead (he says so in episode 3 or 4).

Magic Knight Rayearth might qualify. All three Knights' parents are both alive (though Hikaru's father is not present and we never see Fuu's parents, but Umi's are "the eternal newlyweds").

Lunar: Silver Star Story qualifies. Both of Alex's parents are alive and show up at the beginning of the game and nothing happens to them, IIRC.

In Bubble Gum Crisis; Tokyo 2040 Linna still has both parents alive but she still goes to Tokyo to become a Knight Saber.

Gowa Yoshihiro still has both parents alive in Gasaraki but his family are the ones that force him to do what he does. I don't know if that will help or not.

And in Alien Nine I think both of Yuri's Parents are still alive. But again she has no real choice in the mater.

Yes, golden sun is a violation. In Dragonball, bulma goes off adventuring and her parents are alive and kicking. But now that you mention it, alot of charaters never mention parents

Oops. I guess I was thinking of the mother-ish figure, whatshername.
