You can go on an adventure to find bugs in your back yard. Or on an adventure to Paris with 30 other tourists. But neither is really adventuring.

Gundam SEED. Both of Kira's parents are alive, I'm pretty sure... GSD, though, I think his dad's dead. But in SEED, I know his parents are alive, both of them when they first appear.

Technically FFVII kinda fits that catagory. Cloud's Mother dies by the hands of Sephiroth, and he vows revenge for the death of his mother and his fellow villagers. He doesn't mention the whole thing until a few hours in the game though.

Yoko in The Twelve Kingdoms had both parents. I know that some might say that she was really picked from a tree, so they were not really her parents..

She was born to them.

.....and then there is..........hmmmm.....Well, Speed Racer had Mom and Pops.... not really adventuring... he kept finding adventure though.

... I guess if you live in the anime world it is a bad idea to have a kid. If you do not lose the love of your life and the other parent of your child, it is because they both lost you.

It's a general drama thing, not just an anime thing. Hell, I've done similar stuff in D&D with character backgrounds. Having one or no living parents makes the uprooting more plausible.

I believe no where is this statement more true then in the Naruto Universe. There, not only will you die, but it will be in some horribly disturbing fashion. Parents of the side characters aren't even spared this fate.

Back on topic, Read or Die OVA, we never here about Yomiko's parents so they might still be alive someplace.
