I know, but nobody'd answered the submitter's original question. I could maybe see a Japanese-American (who was fluent in the language and more Japanese than American, of course) doing something in Japan, but even then that's a reach.

I mean, it's cute to have a dream and all that, but I'm amused whenever I read of someone who wants to make it big as an artist in Japan, because while they've managed to get the art style they've also not learned a single thing about Japanese culture.

No, I did, unless you actually consider the interest of "Learning Japanese" to be more than buying a phrasebook and trying to watch anime with the subtitles off.

I'll fully admit elitism, but too many Americans come to Japan with not only no previous language experience, but no interest in learning the language. While I'm far from, say, trythil's level of fluency (and given my schedule over the next year I doubt I'll reach it for a while), I knew my kana before I landed at Narita, which is more than I can say for many of my fellow classmates here.

I think every American who has the 'OMG I want to go to Japan and be a manga-ka!' thing should be required to take at least one semester of Japanese in the US (as well as a basic Japanese Culture 101 or something similar), as well as arrange to continue taking classes while in Japan. I'm ashamed at the amount of cultural ignorance I've witnessed here, and the "I want to go to Japan b/c it's the trendy thing to do" crowd doesn't help matters.
