You should see how many unfinished stories I have going. For every vid I've finished, there are 2-4 incomplete ones waiting to be deleted from my comp. ^_^;

/topic

I've never really considered using other vids for inspiration intentionally. I did try it once, finding a style I liked and wanting to test my hand at something 'similar but not quite derivative'. That idea died at about 1:45 because watching it, I couldn't see myself in it. All I saw was the original I got the idea from. It didn't feel like me, so it didn't feel right.

I do close myself off from outside influence when I finish ripping footage so the editing won't be influenced 'after the fact'. One reason is because of how easily I get distracted and jump from one project to another. But I also like the closed system approach. Whatever influence shows itself in my work is there by default - I don't go out of my way to polute the source once the project has begun. I think that's the best way to get the most of 'me' in a video. I don't really have a style for anything I do, so working with an open system just about guarantees it won't be my work that gets produced. I'm inclined to reproduce, copy, mimic. If I'm going to do that, I might as well just watch the video that I'm copying.

I wanted to make an action one now. Anyone else experience this? =/

I'm a n00b for losing motivation to work on a vid? I'm pretty sure it happens all the time to people. :?

This happens to me too, but I made up my mind a long time ago, not to try to do anything that's already been done. Then again, there are some videos that are so good, that you want to try to make one like it for yourself, whether you actually try to or not.

No... but then my watching-AMVs mood and my editing-AMVs mood aren't really the same thing. For some reason I tend not to connect the two very much, so when I'm editing I might be watching other things, or I might not think of it.

But I don't chase down things similar to it, unless someone's already done the exact same song/anime match. Then I watch out of curiosity and scrap mine, not from being discouraged so much as "it would be cool if someone did this... well, someone did. Okay, I don't have to now."

That was incoherent. Anyway, the answer is no, but not because I have a bulletproof will or anything. I just don't connect other people's AMVs with my own editing process in any notable way. (which is probably why I suck, but that's another story. ;))

I have similar feelings of distraction from AMV projects. Most often when I hit a wall making an AMV.

Work on multiple AMVs of different types at a time.
It will take more time, but then you will have a few done at once.

or

Try to get a clear focus on what you wish to express.
That defines a clear objective and gets you motivated to create a vision. Then just keep thinking of how awesome it will be when you are finished or how much better you will be in time for the creation of your next vid. (This is my preferred method.)

Focus and Forethought are the key.

Much like Beowulf, when I'm making a video I watch as much as I can, not only of the same artist and anime, but of completely different sources as well. They setrve as background- things I don't want to do, things I'd like to emulate, patterns I like and dislike are easier to pick out when I'm actually editing.

It's actually amusing/annoying for me at the moment, because there are very few Magic Knights Rayearth videoso on the org (As single source videos) so I actually have very little to emulate, especially because none of the existing vids are even remotely close in concept to mine.

And if action video ruined your mood, why not watch some slower, dramatic/spiritual videos to get you back in the swing of things?
