Steamboy!

Post by Lone Wolf » Wed Mar 23, 2005 4:18 pm

I just recently went to go see Otomo's new movie Steamboy, and it was GREAT! I absolutely loved it. The quality is unbelievable: the colors, the motions, the characters, the story...it's all good. You must see this movie. It took 10 years in the making and it shows.

I dug it. There were a few problems I had with it, but apparently, 20 minutes were cut out of the dubbed release :?

It was beautifully animated, but the story needed work. Not only was it clichéd, but the love story angle was badly out of place.

I went and saw Steamboy last night at Nuart Theatre in Santa Monica, CA. It is showing there this week only and it is subtitled. There is not much parking there and the theatre smelled funky. (I think it already had con-funk from a weekend of otaku.)

Overall, I wasn't very impressed. The movie felt long. It's a lot of eyecandy. I was impressed by the animation of the machines, but not much else. The story is confusing. Not much on charcter developement. I overall felt the movie was ridiculous. And the teaser DVD I got from Suncoast had me so excited to see it.
