How do you get past mental blocks?

Post by Dark Sabator » Sat Apr 09, 2005 1:31 pm

I'm working on a new AMV (FMA with the song being The Offspring: "The Kids aren't alright) and I've made a really good start, some excellent syncing, action and lip, and I've come to a screeching halt. Just, no ideas at all. How do you guys get past your mental blocks? How do you come up with new ideas?

This won't help you, but since you asked...

I plan it out before I start the video. If I don't have any idea what I'm going to do for more than a piece or two of the video, it's too vague a concept to start on - I need to flesh it out more first.

If you do that, you never get stuck partway through - you never waste good editing work on a video you have no idea how to finish. In that case, motivation is the only thing holding you back.

/to be helpful

Try watching your favorite scenes from the anime and listening to the song over and over. Maybe your mind will make a connection you missed when you were actually trying to edit. Brainstorming is easier if you let it come naturally - instead of staring at the editing program and trying to force the ideas to come to you.

The key is to plan out the whole AMV in your head before you start it, to have ideas for almost every part of the song. I don't even start with AMVs when I can't seem to figure some parts of the song out.
Of course it can happen that I'm still out of ideas. What helps in this case is to watch other AMVs with the same anime and to get inspriation by them ;)

Just stop caring.
If you stop trying, you'll get any ideas you want.

Witch is why I say "Why care to care, when you shouldn't care at all."

not really :/

i have this problem all the time. if it's a project you really want to finish then get out a piece of paper or notepad and start writing down what ever comes to mind when you start thinking about the amv your making... anything, just write it down. it should at least get your brain thinking about the video agin if not generate some new ideas for the video. if that doesn't work, do what i do... don't edit it for a long time and come back to it when you ifnaly figre it out -_-

By the way, this explains the status of my RoS2 track perfectly. It also explains my DDR3 and DDR4 tracks.
