Naruto...the new DBZ?

Post by RutKiskasca » Mon Apr 11, 2005 12:12 pm

I have just op'd about a dozen videos. I have also watched a lot of videos that are currently entered in cons I am entering videos in. Statistically speaking, roughly 60% of the videos I saw were Naruto videos. There were a couple of DBZ videos, a couple of Inu Yasha videos, and a very few others. The only thing that really distinguished the Naruto vids from each other was the skill of the individual editors and the success with which they all basically created the same video. Same basic musical style, same editing style, all the same scenes.

Now, before you start thinking that I started a thread just to rant about Naruto and DBZ, here is the point. Some of those Naruto videos were really well edited, and some of them were pretty poorly edited. When I op a video, I try to be kind, but I try to be accurate. I find it VERY hard to find justification for rewarding a Naruto video, DBZ video, or Kenshin video with an originality score higher than a 5, if I am being kind. Along the same lines, I KNOW that I will NEVER watch most of those videos again, as it is a struggle just to force myself to watch them all the way through the first time just for the op. So, how can I give them a reviewability score higher than 5 on a really good day?

Now, is this unfair? It's not that I dislike the series. It's not my cup of tea, but I don't dislike it. It obviously has some very impressive scenes that lend themselves to some really cool editing....but those scenes are always used, and they don't surprise me anymore, no matter how slick they look in the video.

In the back of my mind, I have this little voice that is telling me, "If you give them an honest op, they are going to be hurt, and they are going to be vengeful, and they are going to give you a payback op with low scores. That is a possibility, but it feels just as wrong inflating scores that I would honestly rank low.

As far as constructive criticism, I can give someone pointers or opinions on what I would do regarding their edits or effects...but how can I phrase "pick different source" and give pointers on that? I find myself getting pretty burned out after the fourth naruto video, and it is VERY hard to remain positive.

So, here it is people...my unsolicited opinion on these types of videos. If you are struggling to come up with a video idea, and you are coming up with Naruto, Kenshin, DBZ, etc...you may want to keep struggling. I place the responsibility on YOU, the editor, to produce an original, re-viewable video. It is not my responsibility to fluff your ego by lying to you if I have seen a thousand other people do what you just did, and tell you that it was more original than KFC. Naruto in a music video is about as fresh as Thanksgiving Turkey on Christmas, and no amount of After Effects is going to make it stand out from the rest.

If you make a video using source that has been done to death, and then you solicit opinions, you should expect low originality scores and not be mad about it. You have a right to say why you think it is original, but not to expect someone else to find it original.

If I am way off base here, please let me know.

Well said, and I find I agree with you.

I think one important distinction that should be made clear, is that it's not so much a case of saying to anybody "you shouldn't make Naruto videos". If that's what someone wants to make, fine, but at the same time, they shouldn't expect everyone to love it and give out high scores.

I have wished, more than once, for a narutomusicvideos.org so that it could be more easily ignored.

Retaliation is inevitable. The only solution is to either not do reviews, or qualify any opinion exchanges with "no Naruto/DBZ".

The source material, while certainly important, does not have to be a *huge* part of the "Originality" score.

Originality should be (In my opinion of course), in no patricular order:

1. Source Material. Now I said it didn't have to be a *hug* part of it.. it is still important when pared with the other 2.

2. Music selection. Lincon Park and Evaesence done to DBZ/Naruto and such simply have been done over and over again.

3. Speical Effects. While not needed or always there, they can add to the originality of the video if properly used. (See this and last yeras Video's of the Year to see what I mean)

4. Editing style. Very rarely does this come up in "originality" but there are times where, say, someone does their video in double-speed the whole time. Or maybe they use alot of still pictures in their video to good effectiveness. THose last 2 are pretty unique here at the ORG since not everyone and their mother does them.

5. Concept of the video. "You-could-never-understand-my-pain" videos are overdone. Hence why people are really getting bored with Evaesence and Linkin Park videos. Now if you could take a fresh concept to Naruto or DBZ, then people still enjoy it. Case in point, there is that one Naruto vid where it's audio of a "ninja school". The audio was perfect for the show. It made sense, it worked and it was something that not everone else has done.

Think about this last ears #1 Video. TONS of Naruto. Most people aren't complaining about the fact it was used because it was part of a unique concept that made it's footage work and pretty much was necessary for what the maker of the video was trying to do.

So to make a long post longer: DBZ, Naruto, Evaesence and Linkin Park not, by themselves unoriginal. The combinations they have been used in ARE unoriginal at this point. Personally, i'll watch a DBZ/Naruto video as long as it isn't combined with a Liunkin Park or Evaesence video... and vice-versa.

Take everything into account when giving that originality score and deciding on wether to download a video.

I always though of originality as a concept-centric score. Just because a video is done to a particular series or to a particular song, doesn’t automatically mean that it's not original or innovative. My last video was a Naruto video (as was the other one I have up here, but that's beside the point), so I can automatically assume that less people will watch it because it seems (by the info listed) to be unoriginal. Because of that, fewer opinions will be given to it and some people will find great pleasure in downloading it and giving it a 1 without watching it. Because of that less people will be inclined to watch it and the interest will dry up. Why not take those preconceived notions and give a video a shot... try mine if you want... you might not think the series is that unique or the audio source (as listed) is that unique, but you'd be surprised. Well, maybe o.o;;

Now I don't fault you for not wanting bad videos to take up your time, but it would be a very good thing if everyone in general would honestly OP some, well, BAD vids once in a while so the average scores aren't so damn high! A consequence to this would be that you might find something you like that you wouldn't have thought was that original.

Basically, what I’m trying to say, is that the originality score is the originality of the CONCEPT not that of the series or music. Although, many factors usually combine the 2 together so the line is blurred.

you bring up some good points... this is one reason i don't do ops anymore, or beta test. i've done enough ops and beta tests and have experienced the person get angry when i give them what they didn't want to hear. i used to hold back a little and not be completely hontest, but once that changed, it was rediculous. it's not worth my time anymore.

as for using an over used source and originality, to me originality is a broad spectrum that involves not only the animes in the video but audio and concept. to me concept holds way more ground then anything else. if the editor has a concept that i havn't seen used with a particular anime, then that itself deservs high originality. the anime and the music are only tools to help display your concept and i don't think they should hold more ground.

over the years i've started to shift from chosing an anime or a song and making video off of that. i start with a concept and find an anime and song i can use to best represent it. kinda like casting actors that would best fit the role. the anime, or animes, contain my actors and the music is what ties them to my concept.

this one reason i like Wisper of the Best a lot. even tho naruto was used, i don't look at it that way. i see a video and a story and naruto just happened to be the best anime to fit the role. and the editor (or is it editors?) didn't use the story of naruto, he/they created their own.

anyway, thats my two cents :P

I don't really care about originality in videos anymore... (OMG) I mean Toushi was a Naruto action video like the 10 million other ones but I enjoyed it to it's fullest extent. It's all just a simple matter of me liking the video regardless of the anime/song/concept.

Maybe I should start giving out 10s for originality.... oh wait, I hate the opinion system with a passion and want it to die a bloody death.

You see? This is the problem - the way some viewers get this idea the creator owes them something, or anything at all.

It's not my responsibility to make something you find reviewable. It's not my responsibility to make anything for you or anyone else here. It's not my responsibility to conform to your idea of originality. That's a big one right there. Originality = have I seen this before? Maybe you *have* seen it before, but that doesn't mean the creator has. What's original to him may not be original to you, but that's not his problem. It's yours for watching it instead of making something for yourself.

If you're not satisfied, make your own videos or stop watching vids for anime you know aren't 'your cup of tea'. If you don't care for the anime, what are you doing watching a dozen or more vids for that anime? Vids on this site list the 'anime used' right at the top.

Don't like it, don't watch.

i think your missunderstanding ruts stand on this subject...

you have a good point, but a lot of editors "want" people to like their videos, so if they want them to, then yes it is their responcibility to make it reveiwable and well, likeable... i think thats what rut is saying...

Yeah, the last part of his post does specify those who make vids to overused anime and then ask for reviews. The first half seems more of a complaint against any amvs using these anime (big name amvs, given the "no over-use of After effects will fix that" comment). As far as I know, those 'big name' Naruto vids don't ask for ego-pumping, they get that without begging for ops.

If this is just a reply to the 12 vids he reviewed, I think he should have emailed it to the creators. Here, it strikes me as a 'call out' to anyone working with this anime.
