Now, is this unfair? It's not that I dislike the series. It's not my cup of tea, but I don't dislike it. It obviously has some very impressive scenes that lend themselves to some really cool editing....but those scenes are always used, and they don't surprise me anymore, no matter how slick they look in the video.

No..it's not unfair in the least bit. It's not just Naruto, or DBZ. It's also Trigun, Bebop and any other moderatly popular anime. I honestly look for FMA to be next.

In the back of my mind, I have this little voice that is telling me, "If you give them an honest op, they are going to be hurt, and they are going to be vengeful, and they are going to give you a payback op with low scores. That is a possibility, but it feels just as wrong inflating scores that I would honestly rank low.

If I think a vid deserves low scores..I give low scores. I'd expect no less from someone op'ing my videos. If they can't deal with the idea that *gasp* people may not think their video is hot stuff..they need to find a new hobby. There's always the mod dropbox if you feel someones given you a low score as payback for something.

I place the responsibility on YOU, the editor, to produce an original, re-viewable video. It is not my responsibility to fluff your ego by lying to you if I have seen a thousand other people do what you just did, and tell you that it was more original than KFC. Naruto in a music video is about as fresh as Thanksgiving Turkey on Christmas, and no amount of After Effects is going to make it stand out from the rest.
If you make a video using source that has been done to death, and then you solicit opinions, you should expect low originality scores and not be mad about it. You have a right to say why you think it is original, but not to expect someone else to find it original.

That hits the nail on the head. While there's nothing whatsoever wrong in using an anime that's been well used before..try out a new concept with it instead of something along the lines of mindlessrandomaction or what have you. And Rut's right also on not expecting others to feel the same way you do about your video. Just because you think it rocks doesn't mean I'm going to. And if I don't feel that way..I'm not going to op the video that way either.

I would agree with you, but in this case, the person posted a thread asking for an op. If you don't want my opinion, you should definitely not ask me for it. IF you ask me what I think, don't be mad if it isn't all roses and sunshine.

I gave the creation of this thread a LOT of thought, and re-read the forum rules two times before posting it. My goal was to get feedback from people who love and hate, make and watch, these types of videos. Here's what I have learned.

Some people don't have as big an Anime collection as I do. That doesn't mean that, after they put forth all the effort to make a video that they are proud of, and then post it and solicit comments on their editing, that it's fair to rip them for it. There are two things that I will take into consideration in the future that I didn't take into careful enough consideration when writing these recent ops.

First, the score. I may still give lower scores for originality if a video uses Naruto and Linkin Park, just because, how original could anyone make it with those two sources? However, I will give much more consideration to what was done visually when determining that score.

Second, the comments. If an editor put their heart and soul into a video, and it didn't turn out to be the next "Believe", that's ok. Their responsibility as an editor is to have fun making the video, and to consider the forum they exhibit it to. My responsibility when giving an op is to try to tell them what they did right, what I think they did wrong, and how they could improve next time.

It's been fun seeing the positive and negative reactions to this thread.
