Quick Question

My college is having a film festival and wish for our anime club to show AMVs. The problem is, that we must obtain artist's permission, first. I would like to know if it's okay to ask the general public in one of the forums. If that's acceptable, I would also like to know which forum would be the best to do that in. I don't want to break any rules or anything......

Having lived in Vancouver, WA before joining the Air Force I suspect you are refering to Clark College. I would have absolutely no problem with you showing any of my AMVs.

I suspect the best way would be to attempt to contact the creators via email, AIM, or similar.

Personally, I'm fond of the argument that they put it up for public download, so they've essentially given up all practical forms of control...

Yes, I'm aware that such an argument holds no legal water.

In my high school anime club I would show videos I downloaded. I think a lot of people did this elsewhere and I doubt anyone will mind you playing their videos as long as it isn't for profit.

I will admit to doing as much in my anime club. I came to the conclusion long ago that it wasn't worth the effort to contact the editors, especially considering that I ususally make the playlist a day or two before the club event.

Techinically, we don't really need permission to air the videos, but the film club is the one putting on the festival, and it's their rules. The anime club has to obide by these terms, or our weekly event will be terminated for that night.

Can you just forge email permission for each video you want to show? It's about as much as you'll get over the Internet, and it's not likely that people will go as far as, say, checking email headers.

A bigger problem would probably be securing the permission from the original authors of the video and audio used in each AMV...
