Good AMVs Bad AMVs, Is there such a thing?

Post by ashiteruSweetSurrender » Mon May 02, 2005 5:44 pm

Now, at first glance everyone should initially say, "Yes, of course! Duh!". I beg to differ... for a few reasons.

When I say Bad AMVs I mean the typical long winded, not on beat, long clip, mouth moving, non-original vid as usual, with bad scores... right? Wrong! (In some cases.) There have been quite a few vids i've seen here and there that cover most or all of the aspects I listed before and have straight 8s or 9s... (I'm not gonna list them because I don't wanna diss anyone.)

Most of the time, the main reason is, because this anime is new or never done better in the form of music videos. Such as Chobits and DNAngel and even in some cases Fruits Basket. I'm not looking for good ones in those but I'm just saying that's where I've mostly found these less than awesome vids with awesome scores. It kinda pisses me off because I can honestly say my vids possess none of those qualities except mabye a few off-beats here and there with less and less as I've become more experienced. But, I never get those awesome scores that one vid made of only manga pics receives.

I'm not saying I deserve them... I just think they don't. And if they do, which people seem to think so... why can't mine? I prolly work 10X as hard as that person here and there that just so happened to pick up that new-on-the-market anime and throw a few clips together with no transitions and a clear song who gets those great scores.

Another reason could be that those vids just happen to have some fans of that new anime come across or NOOBs who are so excited to see their fav with music, when I typically do old anime... like Sailor Moon and Escaflowne, who both have better vids than I... so people judge mine quite harshly.

Anyway, anyone have any more reasons? Or do you agree, disagree? Please tell, I'd like to know what others think.^^

I don't understand- first you question the existence of good/bad AMVs, then beg to differ that there aren't such things as good/bad AMVs, and finally, you start pointing out qualities of a bad AMV? Image

Yeah, my newest video came out a while ago and so far my reviews have been worse than other videos I've made in the past. Now, no offense to people who like my videos but I dont really get it. I've had some people give me all 9s and 10s for a video that really isn't that good, and yet my new video (My best one by FAR) gets much worse reviews. I dont really care for my best work to go practically unnoticed while something I made in a day is downloaded the most. :?

Of course it might just be me being crazy. :D

lol welcome to the futility of relativity.

I think everyone goes through your thought process a bit. Nothings worse than going to a convention and seeing what wins when you lose. I don't care if I lose to a good video but to lose to shit? Oh man, the only thing that pisses me off more is someone ripping headphones off my head when I'm not looking. In the grand scheme of things, the concept of "good" or "bad" doesn't even exist, but we dont function on that plane so its pointless trying to beat yourself up over it.

Also on a less hippy note, you have to remember that its not the viewier's job to appreciate all the hard work you put into your art, whatever it is. All a viewer can do is appreciate the end product. The blood sweat and tears that go into it aren't any of their buisness.

Also in a sad note, most people watch videos to see their favorite anime characters with songs that they like. Thats it. Thats why Naruto with Nu-Metal is higher ranked on the top10 than things like "Souls of Rage and Sorrow".

Thats the audience that watches your videos. It hurts to accept that, but thats life.

In short: from our perspective, fans have no taste.

heh... I don't know any other way to word it other than how can there be such thing as good and bad if bad is good when good is bad... confusing... i know. lol.

I'll agree with Beo's perspective on cons. Not just as far as winning and losing goes, but seeing a macroblocked, divx-logoed (and GameSpot logoed), interlaced, off-timed FFVII video get this hysterical fangirl screaming reaction just because "OMG Sepiroth" came onscreen is a bit disheartening. Especially when you then see them sit silently through something truly great like Urban Ragnarok. So yeah, it can seem a little fan-biased at times, but fortunately, most good videos are able to get recognition still.

it depends on the viewer, normaly..."fan boys/girls" arent the most reliable source for a critique.

Actually I watch AMVs based on a couple things.

1. If they are reccomended from a reliable source.
2. From a creator I like.
3. In a random search for good AMVs.
4. Opinon swap :P

Not really based on song or anime, but you know I'm one in a million. :)
