Is Xvid the best compressor for this job?

Post by gunhoe86 » Thu May 12, 2005 1:27 pm

I've got a video with frame size 720x480, 29.97fps, 6'12", all that comes to about 1.3 GB. I ran it through VirtualDub using Xvid compression, but the filesize is still too high to upload here. (137MB) I tried adding a 2:1 reduction filter, but that made the video quality a whole lot lower than what I'd like. Is there a better compressor or better way to go about this?

That's a good point, it did comprise about 35-40% of the overall size. I'll try it out.

720x480 and 360x240 are not appropriate resolutions for online distribution because neither resolution maintains a proper display aspect ratio on computer monitors, and you're encoding more pixels than you really need.

Also, the encoder can't do a good job if its input is of mediocre quality.

Read these in their entirety:

http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/ ... atios.html
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/xvid.html

They will most likely answer all of your questions; if you have more, come back here and we can work on those.

Well, I've gone over these pages and they were a huge help. I've noticed a few missing filters from the AMVapp package like mfrainbow and mftoon. These would be a huge help, but I can't find them anywhere. I went to the AVISynth webiste and got some 404s, does anyone know where they can be found? Other than that, things are going quite nicely thanks to your help!

mfrainbow and mftoon are not plugins -- they are scripted functions.
As such, they reside in .AVS files that have to be imported (or in .AVSI files that <i>don't</i> have to be imported if you put them in the plugins folder).

You can find them here:

Ah, I see. So I've got them in the AVSI files in the plugins folder, now do I just add them to the code such as:
mftoon(strength=128)

mfrainbow(strength=255)
That seems to be working..... thanks for the tip.
