i think you summed it up pretty well there, what else could be said. i wish they would continue the story to answer all these questions.

If we follow the original ending:

SPOILER:
- Evangelion Unit 00 was lost in the battle against the 16th Angel
- Evangelion Unit 02 was damaged severly in the battle against the 17th Angel

Which left Unit 01 the only viable Evangelion at the end of Episode 24.
If we follow the Director's Cut (and End of Eva) ending:

SPOILER:
- Evangelion Unit 00 was lost in the battle against the 16th Angel (but this time, Rei "ascends" and is now aware of her own potential)
- Evangelion Unit 02 was destroyed by the Evangelion "Angels".

Which left Unit 01 the only Evangelion instrumental to the project -- mainly because it was the only Evangelion made from Lillith's matter.
So, the "Eva's coming together as one" idea doesn't make sense. :?

The original ending was like this -- Shinji's exploration of self.

After seeing it myself, I found it both interesting and rather lacking a concrete end (which eventually led Anno and crew to create End of Eva).

SPOILER:
I especially liked the "dojinshi" reality sequence at the end of the original Episode 26 -- a really funny sequence for anyone who has played a Japanese Dating-Sim game.

Heh... That's true. How the hell are they gonna survive if the Earth is almost destroyed and devoid of life?

Remember... depending on how you saw the movie is how you saw the ending. If you listen to the dialouge, there's something aboput restoring the AT Fields. AT Fields = LIFE! But, some people thought the world ended and Shinji and Asuka are the new Adam and Eve. Gainax always has open-ended finales... :?

I guess Max Payne isn't much of a yaoi fan...

I wouldn't call them Adam and Eve. Especially since there may very well be other people alive in other parts of the world. With the ATFs restored, people that can see themselves as individuals will come back.

From what I saw, people could make the choice to become human. So, in my POV, it wasn't SUCH a depressing ending, besides the fact that Shinji was half-crazy XD

hmm...I guess it was kinda happy...

Heres a question...

If you were in that position, what would you have picked?

Independent life, or Life where Everyone are one?
I'm not crazy, the voices told me so...
