who is the most messed up anime character...?

If you're going to pick a character from Evangelion, might as well pick them all - except maybe Pen-Pen and I'm not too sure about him (it?).

OHM. I think Keitaro or that guy from Mahubaro. As a matter of fact, any poor guy that just gets hit around or gets yanked all over the place and doesn't enjoy it (Which leaves you hentais out, 'cause yes, we know you'd enjoy it). Pretty much those guys are just nothing more but items, stripped of their humanity! I don't find it funny, 'cause it's overdone, and the series uses it as a joke, but meh. *ends rant 'fore gets too far*

Anyway, hm, most messed up....

Other than Excel from Excel Saga and Tomo from Azumanga Daioh and other such characters that are obviously humorous/on crack, I'd have to agree with TaranT--when I first saw the thread, my thought was "That king guy from Now and Then, Here and There," and I've only seen the first two episodes of that show. Other contenders would be Yoshii or other characters from Texhnolyze. There's also Dilandau, of course, and Koshirou from Koi Kaze. I have to put in a vote for Touma from Sakura Diaries, as well.

Dorothy Catalonia, from Gundam Wing. She was such a sweet girl, obsessed with war. How can anyone think war is such a great and noble endevour.

I just finished reading vol. 15 from Kare Kano. @_@ I think Arima Soichiro is the number one most messed up character. He has SUCH a tainted past, and it trying so hard to overcome it, but he just can't..... Well, he kind of can, but something like that just leaves a scar on you for the rest of your life.

Of the anime that I've seen, Radical Edward of CBB seems to be the least "all there".

Second place? Asuka Langley Soryu from Eva. More issues than Shinji and his dad put together.

I'm amazed no one's mentioned Guts from Berserk yet.

Starting off from a 'cursed' childhood under his dead mother, to watching his adoptive mother die...being abused by his adoptive father, who later tries to kill him (and, in self-defense, Guts's killing him causes him to be driven from his home.)

So he spends most of his life just wandering from battlefield to battlefield with no real purpose but to fight...then along comes Griffith and the Hawks. With them he finally starts to get everything together, starts to finally have a normal life... ...then along comes

Miroku. Who could be more messed up (pervertedly) than Miroku? Oh, wait. Jaraiya from Naruto. Forgot about him. Then there's the entire everything from Fooly Cooly. That whole show is messed up. The super righteous shaman things who hate zeek on shaman king are pretty twisted. And finally, Hamtaro. Enough said.
