I'm currently in the planning stages of my third AMV. I used windows movie maker for the first 2, and it's a nice program, easy to use, but it's slow, freezes often, and takes ages to import files. I tried using Premiere but it had some troubles adding the audio or something.
So, can somebody recommend a decent video editor that's simple to use like WMM, but...better?

well, if WMM is a linear editor, and you like that sort of thing, you may want to take a look at Nero Vision Express (comes bundled with Nero Burning ROM). It is very easy to use, pretty accurate with it's clips and music, and you can work directly with mpg files without re-encoding them. You an also then output it to an MPG file, take it into VirtualDubMod and change it to an uncompressed AVI and do all the fun tweaks in the guides...
or, you can try the Magix software mentioned in the sticky at the top of this guide. Pretty easy to use (so far, as I've only played with it for a few days in the demo).
