Who Likes Green Day?
I think Green Day is one of the greatest bands ever. They've been together for a long time and they put a smile on my face

I think springing from the vein of the teen movie bands like New Found Glory (vomit) hurt their image. Way too much touchy love in their early days to be unique from the other bands. That was cheesy and old by the mid 80s.
Basket Case....cheesy voice effects, more teen movie junk. However, promise shown with a remake of My Generation and a hand full of darker lines.
They seem to have gotten fairly cool. That says a lot coming from a total Metalhead.
I swear Boulevard of Broken Dreams must have been written when possessed by the spirit of Kurt Cobain.
I think the voice and image is still a too peppy. Too many effects in the sound as well (no more electronic dulling of the voice). However, it is a band with some promise.
They are good, but if they dump the effects and embrace the insanity they could be great. The fact that they survived the other teen movie theme song bands shows they have a deeper side that has not yet come completely to light.
The real trick for them will be to create a knock out album. They have some hits, but every band needs an album that says here forever to cement themselves as artist. This takes a line up on an album of several hits. Not just hits for the general public, but hits for their target audience and not a pocket of popularity that many sell out to. These are big shoes to fill with albums like, Back in Black, Appetite for Destruction, Yellow Submarine, Led Zeppelin IV, Nevermind, Metallica, Skid Row, Pyromania, Just Push Play, etc.
I hope too see something nice come from this band. They have the gift, but I think it remains to be seen if they figure out how to use it at maximum power.

Um....Boulevard of Broken Dreams is entirely not in the spirit of Kurt Cobain. His lyrics were never so hackneyed, and were usually wrapped up in obscure metaphors. Also there isn't that raw quality that Nirvana has in many of their songs....the whole piece, including the solo, is very polished and carefully produced. I fail to see the connection.
Although I admit I actually do like the song.

There skills are not yet at a level to be considered polished.
I wasn't talking about 'in the spirit of'.
Its just the hopeless feeling of an abandoned life of lost Hollywood dreams that reminds me of Cobain. Picture the song as if he played it in his style.
You are right Cobain used far more metaphorical lyrics, but still it was the concept somewhere in the song.
Come to think of it Greenday would do nice to think less about their notes.
