Blind Man's Tale: Monster AMV/GMV [updated]
After a year of almost-no-editing, Otohiko returns in somewhat-poor-compression glory with...
A tribute to... an old man we see for one scene in a 78-episode anime series? Told through NON-ANIME?
Well, yes. Does that seem strange to you?
(Before anyone runs with a firehose - yes, this is chiefly a non-AMV, but it uses a good portion (1/3) of anime footage. Thusly, it was catalogued but not uploaded. It should be of some interest to AMV things, regardless)
***
Or, rather, it is an expansion of what I think the character's story would've been like were it ever animated instead of mentioned in 3 sentences.
It's really more of a little 'movie' than an AMV. Has that "Das Boot" flavor to it, too...
For those who have no idea what I'm talking about - well, you see, early on in the awesome anime series of "Monster", the main protagonist, Dr. Tenma, visits an old man who once served in battle on a German submarine. This fact itself has no huge relevance to the story, but the old man does. In fact, arguably, if it weren't for the info he gave Tenma - the following 73 episodes would probably never happen!
As some of you may know, I'm a die-hard Silent Hunter III fan. This particular idea popped into my head suddenly last week when I 'died' in a particularly dramatic fashion.
They say, it's the idea that counts. In this case, that's really the main point. Editing- and quality-wise, the video is nothing stellar - but I think it tells just the story I wanted it to tell. Please be mindful of my limits on sources, compression, and editing skills. (great, now I sound like I'm old and blind...) I'm all-too-well aware that this video has problems, so I'm not particularly looking for criticism. If you'd like to be constructive though - I'd most welcome practical suggestions, and I'd be very glad to update this video if possible. Consider this my "Other First Video". After all, I'm a born-again noob thanks to my long AMV-hiatus.

So, as always, Oto offers odd, unpopular ideas with tame execution - any questions?
If that's fine by you, then you might find this interesting.

This video really needs a higher quality verison. Compressing a seven minute video into a 45MB file is just wrong. The editing itself was solid, I loved the convoy assault. Source footage wise, I'm just starting on Monster (ep 2). I'm eager to see how the U-boat story is going to factor in. I've heard nothing but good things about SHIII. I can do full blown sims at times, so I'm definately going to have to check it out. At least pull the demo.

Wow, that was pretty cool. You're probably going to make me jealous again by saying that you didn't spend too long editing this video... . Regardless of that, I enjoyed it very much.
I've noticed that your editing style seems to make a video more than just the sum of its parts. This video is definitely no exception. There are so many good things here that I think I'd better get them into an OP rather than list them now. Great job!

The uboat story doesn't really factor in visually, actually - I literally used ALL the frames that the old man was in! It does, however, factor in when you consider why the boy listened to it, but that's another story.Coffee 54 wrote: I'm eager to see how the U-boat story is going to factor in. SHIII is an incredible game, if it's your taste (be warned: it's not a casual gamer's game. eats up a lot of time.) There's no demo, unfortunately. I can also tell you about the not-so-good things about it, but I won't since they factor in much less than they might seem, and many have been improved by mods.
(I am, by the way, an 'official' SHIII modder - that is, working with the most major group working on improving its' realism)
Well, not to make you jelaous - but I really didn't. 8-9 hours of actual timeline work.... Capturing the footage probably took a lot more time - though it was a bit more fun than just ripping DVD's hehe.Jasper-Isis wrote: You're probably going to make me jealous again by saying that you didn't spend too long editing this video...
And there's no reason to be jelaous, since I also spent/wasted a whole day desperately trying to improve the video quality.
That's the problem with getting an HQ version - I'd love to do it, but I don't know how far I can reasonably push it. I don't have a proper capture card, so I'm forced to rely on Fraps. Which means my source footage is already so-so.
I'll probably keep trying.
Now I'll have to release it to the 'other side' - the sim diehards. See how they react hehe...

Thanks for the replies guys - I'm glad you've found it good despite some of the inherent problems...

...hmmm, you may be one of the unlucky ones with an ISP that uses funny proxies - if it doesn't show up, I suggest you wait for the RapidShare "happy hours" which are sometime in the evening (where there's no limits, and thus everyone on any ISP will have no problems).
Wouldn't have used RapidShare if this were a definite AMV, but I just don't think it is...

Thanks both of you - I'm glad you saw it that way. Storytelling is the only thing I was really hoping this vid would doExcellent storytelling.

Excellent video. The visual quality wasn't that bad, but the audio compression really killed the depth-charge FX -- the bass is just destroyed and it sounds crumpled rather than crushing. Everything else was awesome, and I would gladly put up with a multi-hour yousendit download or sending a CD plus international P&P for a HQ version with proper audio.
Huge ups, though, even as is.
