It should come with capturing software as well as viewing software. If you have an ATI card, I can go into more detail. I have successfully captured footage this way more than once.

Maybe I should write up a guide.
Not that I doubt your capability of writing a guide for this, but is there really a reason? For the cost of the capture card alone you can purchase a dvd drive for your computer, and for about $20, you can buy a dvd burner. If you can install the capture card, you can install the dvd reader/burner.

Now, back in the day when dvd drives were in the hundreds of dollars (never mind burners), I could see doing it this way, but with the advance in technology and the drop in prices...

but who am I to limit the flow of information on the internet...

x2. The first burner I got (it was the Sony 4x DVD+/-RW) was $350. I just ordered a 16x NEC burner for $50. Considering the advantage that DVD drives have over capture cards (you can rip a DVD and multitask, but you can't capture and multitask unless you want a bunch of dropped frames), the upgrade is worth the money.

This person already HAS a card, or so they say.

Besides, when I got into editing, dvd rippers were crap. I last attempted to use one in 1999. It took my seamless ripping with Mac the Ripper and my Mac Mini to convince me to give rippers a realistic second go.

I admit, I am convinced.
