I think that alot of people read other people's journals. If I see a name that looks interesting or familiar, I'll read it.
At first I thought that the journals were kind of like diaries, but alot of people write interesting stories or commentary. It's like seeing things in a different light.
Or, sometimes, I'll watch someone's video, really like it, and then read the journal to see what this person is all about.
Also, somehow, it's a means of making new friends.
Personally, I've had two people send me pm's after reading a journal entry of mine, and at least one left a comment about my journal in an opinion that they left.
So, yes, the journals are useful.

Until we get that 'fan management' feature on the site, journals are my best bet at keeping up with my favorite creators. Most people say something in their journals when they put up a new vid, so I don't have to worry about missing the announcements. It would be easier if they'd pm me when they have new vids up (I currently count on two people to do that since they rarely post in their journals), or make an update group for fans to subscribe to (I only know one person who does this, and she doesn't post in her journal, either). But that's a lot of work.
I just poke my nose into their journals to keep track of them. ;p
I don't know how many people read my journal to keep up with video releases, but since I stopped announcing most of my vids, the journal's the best way to know when I put up something new. I also put up little updates for my online friends so they know I'm not dead if I turn lurker for a while. I used to think about putting controversial things up in my journal, but I get a few hits now and then so I stopped writing anything that might get read by the wrong person.

Journals... well... I've done an experiment for my own once to find out if anybody read these things at all and since I got a response in my PM inbox regarding it, it turns out that people do read them!
Well... I don't know... I'm fairly regularly writing in my journal, I find that it's a nice neat little place to keep track of my video projects as well as my angst and triumphs on things I do on both videos and outside life.
I read other's journals, and actually subscribe to about 3 other people's journals because as some have already mentioned, it allows me to find out about the people behind the videos, and also because there a lot of nice little stories that float about out there...
The most numerous kind of journal entry I've seen recently though go along the lines of:

And that's usually it... kind of pointless imo.Hmm... I'm just testing the journal feature.

I read some occasionally, if they have a sense of wit, then I'll add them to the list. Usually read the same ones, and if the name seems interesting, say for example it's a Palindrome, or has 'bunny' in it.
I don't really use mine to keep track of anything, and I certainly don't release videos with enough regularity to make any difference. Mostly mine are random thoughts, put into text form.
I rarely get responses on them, but they get a lot of hits, so somebody must be reading them.
