BBS?

I've been curiosly browsing around some japanese anime websites and I've noticed that 99% of them have a bbs or pbbs section in their website. I was just wondering if anyone knows what bbs stands for and what is the purpose of these bbs forums.

Bulletin Board Service

Basically, it's a forum, only in Japanese and using a different posting system than something like phpBB. Good luck trying to understand it, unless you're fluent in written Japanese!

That's weird, my family subscribed to a BBS back in the early 90s, and it wasn't in Japanese...

Ah, those were the days. Always a great place to chat, play multiplayer online games (ASCII-based, of course), and download shareware and freeware. And they had four numbers you could call, too -- three running at 9600 baud, the fourth at 2400...

Bulletin Board SYSTEM.

The precursor to websites and the internet, you would connect to them in the pre-internet via modem. The japanese use the term to refer to message boards sections though (which was their primary purpose).
