Would this be more distracting than helpful??

I'm thinking of making an amv in a few weeks that I'm actually going to draw out the timeline and plan it... my other two I've just made up on the spot. I want to try to make an emotion one...

What my idea is to show the bond between two characters as the story, and use a foreign song as the audio.

The song is beautiful and sad already... it's sung in russian though. i've found translations for it which makes it even more moving and even better for this amv... would it be better to put in subtitles of the translation throughout the amv (also how would i do this) or just let the song play and hope that the visual help portray what the song means?

Any advice?

if that made sense...

Try making one with the subtitles and one without the subtitles and see which one you like better.

Honestly, not knowing the translation doesn't bother me while I'm watching a video.

If I were making the amv, I wouldn't include the subs because as a sentimental (as you describe it) vid, I'd want all the attention focused on the characters and not the subs. If they're there people will read them, it might take away from the mood.

You can always post the translation of the lyrics on the video info page.

Personally I'd be fore it, so long as they weren't standard yellow+black outline subs, like some sort of pretty (but readable) font in white.

I've seen it done in AMVs like that before and personally didn't find it distracting. But if you want to minimize distraction like you could just subtitle the important lines every now and then, to make them stand out and to get the lyrics meaning across, yet not have words constantly on the screen.

As for how to make subs, just use whatever "add text" feature your makes has. If you use WMM1 you're SOL.

I agree, and that's what most people do in the video description. I've seen a lot of vids lately posting the lyrics in the description, or if some people aren't lazy, looking on google for them. There was a video I saw recently that woulda been a decent video, if it didn't have the damn things on the top and bottom, the lyrics, and unneccesary objects flying across the screen at random points. That reunied the entire experience, then deleted the AMV.

release the AMV in iether .mkv \ .ogm format and include subtitles, or just releas a .avi file and a subtitles file (.sub , .srt ect.)

If I were to edit a video with a song in a foreign language (or even one in English that simply has lyrics that are hard to make out), I would release a version with hardcoded subs. I'd also release one without and host it on my own server. I prefer the subtitles, but I'd like to give the viewer a choice.

What are Hardcored subs?

Hardcoded means that they are on the video itself, and non-removable. Softcoded is where they are able to be turned on or off; unfortunately, fewer people tend to support the formats that include this function.
