i think the idea of doing both is a good thing... then you can see what you like for yourself..... (i did this when attempting to make a logo, and decided against it cause my beta said it was pretty distracting) also do one with subs and have someone beta it.
though for me it depends on the song..... and execution of the video.
I have seen some that have left in the subs of the original audio, and it helped their video (it was a Tsubasa Chronicle vid, cant remember the title) and the subs actually helped it.... but they clearly created the subs themselves, and didnt use the fansubs (as I have the fansubs... I can see the difference)
Then I have seen a few vids where they subbed the video, one of my favorites is the AMV before Halloween, following the bouncing skull and everything.... then Under Ice also has subs that deffinately helped the video as well, especially to make the concept stronger... (granted they are even songs both in english but still worked IMO)
and the ones that have words flying in and out can also be annoying... because "the" and other words dont really need to be emphisized... though i saw one to Simple Plan and InuYasha that used emphasizing words (on the chorus) that did work, (think it was inuyasha anyways) but i have seen ones that will have the lyrics randomly flying in and out of the video and most of them were annoying... and werent too reviewable to me..
then theres also the suggestion of putting the translation in your video description.... that also helps and shows that you lyric synced... instead of randomness lol...
either way it goes back to my original statement: do one of both, and have someone beta it.. or have a few people beta it... and see which you like better... and if you like non-subbed then put the translation in your vid description.

Why should the exact translations of lyrics matter? In fact, I'd see the fact that most of your audience doesn't know what the lyrics are as an advantage, because that will leave you much more free to interpret the lyrics to them as you want, NOT through subtitles but through imagery.
Seriously. Screw the subs. Well, you can put them in, but only optionally - don't clutter your video with them.
Point number two - please. More Russian AMV's!
If you'd like some help in announcing your AMV at AKROSS (the Russian AMV community), I'd gladly help out with that.

This is by far the best and most comfortable solution imo. go for itI in another thread wrote:Use an avi for online distribution without subtitles. Additionaly put up a srt, ssa, sub or whatever file with the same filename as the avi and note in the video description that the viewer needs to download Vobsub in order to display these. If they have the avi and the subtitle file in the same folder now and playback the avi, the subtitles will show, in any kind of player (even wmp).
This has also the advantage that people can change font sizes, font faces etc.

That would be useful... but a lot of ppl wouldn't want to give out their timing of the subs inwhich they worked hard on, especially Karaoke timingJCD wrote:This is by far the best and most comfortable solution imo. go for itI in another thread wrote:Use an avi for online distribution without subtitles. Coming from you, that has a certain irony.Otohiko wrote: Seriously. Screw the subs.
If you're stressed, make one of each, show some of the people that you actually respect in terms of opinion and see what kind of feedback you get.
If your video is solid, then the translations don't matter anyway since the internal story and structure will hold it together.

Let me clear that up - two my videos have title screens, not subtitles. I'm a big supporter of these, but the intention there is explicitly to focus the viewer on the text. Which is why I prefer to put them on blank screens or scenic backgrounds if I can.
Text, by its tendency of carrying very obvious meaning, is a big eye-catcher. Unless you're explicitly trying to focus the viewer on the text, subs are usually not a good idea.
IMHO, anyway...
