I think dubs are getting a lot better now that the translators are taking the shows halfway seriously. Older shows, dubbed between the 60s and 80s, are just plain **awful**. Like a really cheep Godzilla movie.
Of course, some of the shows they decided to import didn't help any either. (It took forever to get Dad to accept anime since his early experience had been with Speed Racer and Lupin III.)
Sailor Moon, aside from being downright stupid, has a terrible dub. (Or do they really scream all the time in the original?)
As for good ones: anything from Studio Ghibli. They're fanatic about insuring that their work is handled properly. (Gotta love that artistic temperment.)
I also happen to like the FMA dub, but I've also never seen the original.
Yuyu Hakusho is good. I think they made a mistake with Kuwabara's voice, he sounds so much dumber in the dub, but I actually think they made an improvement with Kurama's voice. (He sounded like a little kid in the original! I expressed the opinion that they either had a ten-year-old or a woman doing the voice. Then I found out it was a woman. Gack!) My only real quibble is with the for-TV editing. Please, get the uncut DVDs.
I happen to like the Fruits Basket dub. (Shiguri's voice is done by the same voice actor as Kurama's. Wee!)
Rurouni Kenshin is a good one, too.
Case Closed is okay, except for changing all the names.
But the voice talent is all right.
I love Inuyasha, though I do agree that Kagome sounds much more mature in the original.
You'll never get a perfect dub, unless you're able to get the original voice actors to do the English voices and have the original scriptwriters do the translation. And this is *if* they're all well versed in English.
I do tend to be suspicious of 4Kids and Funimation, though. They tend to be the worst offenders when it comes to mangling anime.
