Close but no cigar: the ideas which didn't QUITE work.
First things first, DO NOT MOVE THIS THREAD TO AMV SUGGESTIONS. IT ISN'T ABOUT SUGGESTIONS.
Have you ever had an AMV idea which you feel is a good one, but it had something wrong which makes it unworkable? I don't mean workable ideas which you had a good reason not to do, I mean ones that you judged simply wouldn't work. Personally, I've had them all the time. The feeling of frustration is infuriating. I thought I'd mention a few of mine:
Haibane Renmei/Long Way Down (The Goo-Goo Dolls): In theory, a Reki/Rakka AMV based around Reki's feelings of isolation, as well as her promise to Kumori (was it Kumori?) to take care of Rakka and become a "good Haibane" ('I never put you down/I never pushed you away'). Unfortunately, the song is simply to upbeat, fast-paced and generally "rock-y" to work with Haibane Renmei and the feel just doesn't quite work. Personally I thought it would, but my partner Nyaa-Chan convinced me otherwise.
Trigun/Go West (The Pet Shop Boys): An action comedy AMV about Vash and his eternal quest for Love And Peace (to "go west" is also an old expression for exploding and the lyrics go 'Go west/Life is peaceful there/Go west/In the open air'). Unfortunately, the electronic feel of the song just doesn't fit the anime at all and it (the song) is also too long.
Lament of the Lamb/(Can't Get My) Head Around You (The Offspring): The idea is simple- the song fits Lament's plot perfectly ('Every single day what you say makes no sense to me/Letting you inside isn't right, you'll mess with me/I never really know what's really going on inside you/I can't get my head around you'). This idea would make an excellent AMV if it weren't for one overriding problem- the anime adaptation of Lament of the Lamb is bloody awful. The character designs are ugly, the animation is cheap, stilted and often repeated, it doesn't go deep enough into the manga's story and half the interesting bits have been left out. I recommend reading the manga, but not trying to make AMVs out of the anime.
Spiral/Numb (Linkin Park): An AMV about Ayumu's feelings of inadequacy towards his brother and his inability to match him and what the Blade Children are expecting from him ('Don't know what you're expecting of me/Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes'). Unfortunately, there's simply bugger-all about Kiyotaka in the Spiral anime so there isn't nearly enough material.
DISCLAIMER: If anyone wants to try and prove me wrong on any of the above counts, feel free to take these ideas. Just don't move the thread to AMV suggestions, OK? This is supposed to be a discussion.

Saikano/"Lovers in a Dangerous Time" by Barenaked Ladies
This combination IS perfect. PERFECT. But I just so bored editing it that I stopped about 50 seconds into it. This is when I discovered my distaste for editing romance videos (though I have another Saikano video idea anyway).

Scrapped Princess/"Wild Child" by Enya
Enya just isn't AMV material. Still, feel the vibes...
Scrapped Princess/"Good Fortune" by PJ Harvey
Too much of the lyrics have to do with NY; both China Town and Little Italy are mentioned, plus other city-related stuff. But the chorus is just too perfect to believe...
Trigun+Cowboy Bebop / "Are you gonna be my girl" by Jet
Just the name of the band alone... Anyway, I had this idea for this song where Vash is chasing Fay all over the place, singing the lyrics on the chorus. It would have worked great as a parody of Tainted Donuts, Especially with a title like "Tainted... Love", or something as a pun. Also, I would have loved to hear the words, "You don't need money with a face like that, do you?" together with the picture of Fay in her green facial mask... Problem is, I don't think there are enough clips to go around for all the chase scenes. Also, the song would go perfect with Fay in her little space pod thingy, but then, how would Vash be supposed to chase her? He doesn't do a lot of space travelling...
Cowboy Bebop/"Money (That's What I Want)" by Flying Lizard (not the original artist)
The voice in this song would work so damn perfectly with Fay it isn't even funny... It's even less funny that there aren't enough clips of Fay in money-related surroundings to make the vid.

DiGi Charat to the Metal Gear Solid 2 main theme.
I could barely find any scenes to mimic the original opening and the effects were pretty complicated to me at the time. I can do the effects better now but the footage still won't work as well.

I'll skip the huge pile of dead projects and list stuff that only, just barely didn't get finished either due to techinical difficulties, or pure lack of something.
Childs toy: Billie Jean.
There is an episode where they rip off this video, it's obviously perfect since they are, you know... ripping off the video anyway. The problem I found is that there is like 2 1/2 minutes of footage and maybe 30 seconds of it usable. No matter how clever you are with flips, fades and panel cutouts, it's hard to stretch 30 seconds of footage into a full length video. My students keep bugging me to finish it, so maybe I'll figure something out. Cheesy 80's effects probably.
Kenshin Ova: Independance day. (Martina McBride)
I still haven't given up on this one totally. It's a country song about an abused woman seen through the eyes of a child. It's actually a fairly powerful song, and there are some great scenes in the ova that would work well with this. the problem; No kids. I got about 1/2 to 2/3rds done with this when I got sick of doing mattes and color matching to get a child character from another show in there.
Inuyasha: Remember the time
Another Michael Jackson project. My most techincally challenging EVER. This one has CG models, mock stages and dynamic cloth simulations out the wazoo. I created an actual production flowchart for this one, since it got so complicated. The idea is pretty simple: take Inuyasha characters and replicate the MJ video as closely as possible, including the syncronized dancing.
Some scenes were relatively easy to figure out, like when I had a phone come flying out of the well and smack Inuyasha in the face. Easy. Others were harder, like having Sessoumaru remove his mask and show Michael Jacksons face. Originally, I had created a model of Inuyasha in Lightwave, lots of polygons, lots of IK control points. It was a nightmare to animate, so I do exactly the same thing all over again and try it with Poser. Great! it's super easy to animate... but looks like crap and the program won't do apha channel mattes for me. Eventually after spending literally over a thousand dollars in software for just this project I killed it.
Berserk:Spleen (William Shatner).
Anyone who has seen my recent Spleen in the skyvideo probably read the tales of horror that went with this one. This is the one that got closest to being actually finished. I had gone all the way to the beta stage and was testing out various uh... variations on effects when I lost my hard drive and all the files associated with the project, except the one crappy beta that I'd saved to my desktop for some stupid reason.
I'm debating a video using a Leonard Nimoy song about Bilbo Baggins that I have sitting on my hard drive.. that one is probably best left untouched.

At the moment we've actually got a project which is badly stalled. I'm not going to say what it is, but we're using Linkin Park's 'Forgotten' and have run into serious problems with some of the lyrics- specifically the last line of the chorus, "Until the sun rises up". Would you believe there is not a single sunrise shot in the entire 26-episode anime we're using? You can push a metaphor only so far, so we're really stuck on it. But we haven't given up yet- I've been intent on this idea for years and it is -apart from this lyrical problem- perfect, even if it is a Linkin Park AMV. No, I haven't given up yet, but it's getting close.
Almost as bad as, if not worse than, having a good idea which is spoiled by a single, unavoidable problem is having an absolutely perfect idea which you just can't do for various reasons. I have an idea for a Hana Yori Dango (Flowers Before Boys) AMV which is, if I may say so myself, sheer genius, but there's no way for me to get my hands on the footage without expending a ludicrous amount of money (I'm an Australian, so I'd have to import from the US). Infuriating!
Actually, someone's done this already. Personally, I didn't like it that much I don't think the feel of the music really matched the anime. Or maybe I just didn't like the song. It wasn't a bad AMV though, it just didn't appeal to me.badmartialarts wrote:Saikano/"Lovers in a Dangerous Time" by Barenaked Ladies
