I love that ribbon effect thing (like in Suberunkers A different side of me) and amvs like Fluxy's Endure or Fluxys Destruction thingy really float my boat and they're all effects lol... But I agree some effects are cheasy but if you look at my and 'the other my' (Sub0)'s videos you'll see some cheasy effects put to good use. Sub0's vid is cheasy as hell to begin with so a curtain call effect, though cheesy, fits. My vid is like a story so the page turning effects, though cheesey, fit perfectly! So it really just depends on the video lol.

While I don't intend to get into a full-on argument here, as the subject HAS indeed been beaten to death in the past, I will just say that this is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. Who are you to say that someone did it "for nothing"? When someone does something in a video, they do it because THAT IS WHAT THEY WANTED TO DO. And right then, that means that its not for nothing. By the exact same logic, you can say that people use cuts and fades "for nothing", people use a certain anime or song "for nothing", or people make amvs in general "for nothing". It's certainly NOT for nothing.Vegggeto_WS_ wrote:Well I understand if it needs to say a certain part of the song. But some people do it for nothing.

Okay, this thread has not been locked yet, and I figure I might as well throw my hat in.
Now while I may not be aware of the offending vids you speak of, I am aware of the default "editing" and "effect" options that come with some software, such as Macromedia Flash and Director.
I think that:
Added special effects != Originality, especially if those effects were not created by the AMV author. Now if the AMV author took the time to really put something unique and special together, well then you got something there!
I remembering seeing a Tenshi Ni Narumon (I'm Gonna Be An Angel) AMV with REM's Happy Shining People. At the end, there's a montage of different clips (Like a TV made up of 16 smaller TVs, each with something different on it) from the series in the background, and appearing from off camera is a giant 3D rotating heart with different rotating insides like something out of a gyroscope.
Did this help make the video interesting? No not really...
...was it original? YES!
The AMV author must have spent LOTS of time putting that together, and combined with the editing, it came out rather good. Maybe not the best or most effective, but as far as romantic little diddies go, it was nice.
If you're going to be original with effects, you have to CREATE THEM YOURSELF! An author can be really creative with their effects, and sometime even the most simplest effects work best:

Simple, clean, and while it has no user created imagery, the purpose it serves is BRILLIANT! Plus, any added effects combined with the all-important editing made this video a winner in my book!
Definitly worth watching and DEFINITLY an original vid.
I say that expressing originality in videos requires a couple things, or couple different ways of expression depending on how you look at it:
1) Original Idea - "Hey, wouldn't be fun if A were set to B and it came out C!"
2) Original Editing - "What instead of having the guy be the main voice, let's have the girl do it! She'd be great lip synching to German Death Metal!"
3) Original Effects - "A Floating Cube with different anime screens playing on all 6 sides that pans out, rotates, and comes into view on another side when transitioning scenes! BRILLIANT!"
4) Original Song - "Well crap! No song fits this idea except for the stuff that's in my head. I have the lyrics, the song tune, but no actual song since I'd have to make it mysel... wait a minute!"
5) Original Anime - "Hmm, you know drawing over these guys with a tablet may not be the prettiest, but somehow it works! Especially the super saiyan girl from Totoro!"
(Points to anyone who can figure out which vid I'm referring too. I forget the song that was used in that one!)
Altogether, how you tackle your vid idea is up to you. Just don't rehash the same GIVEN effects or stuff without any modifications on your part. That just comes off lazy and doesn't give off the same sense of quality.
Even if the hardware or software you have doesn't really matter since even with two VCRs and a tape, you can do a lot.
HUBBA HUBBA ZOOT ZOOT!
It all breaks down to effort in anything you do. Put it in your work and it shows. Don't? Well that shows too!

Actually you make no sense. So you say you make an amv, without days of planning it. Certain songs give amv creators a image in they're head of what they want. But when I see people using the overused cutting out and doing lip synch out of a part that has nothing to do with the song or anime.Zarxrax wrote:While I don't intend to get into a full-on argument here, as the subject HAS indeed been beaten to death in the past, I will just say that this is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. That just looks really dumb.
