Well, I don't own it yet, but here's what I've heard from a friend.
THe dubbing is done decently, however is toned down, almost like it's MEANT for a TV release. THey toned down Sana and Rei's relationship in the dub, among other things, but not in the subtitles. Interesting...
Also, the subtitles are very very true to the dialogue.
Lastly, the biggest thing, the theme song "16 O'Clock News" by TOKIO is not the opening theme. They have, instead, taken the second opening, "Ultra Relax" and used that instead. Appearently this is one of the reasons Kodocha took so long to license. It seems that the people in charge of TOKIO are asking far too much for the rights to the music, and nobody was willing to pay up. So, FUNimation, instead of paying big bucks for the rights to a season-long theme song, just cut it out completely, including references to it in the first episode where the band's lead singer has a short conversation with Sana. In the dub, dialogue is bleeped out, and in the subtitles, there are appearently XXX's over things that couldn't be subbed.
While this is somewhat disheartening, it's only a small aspect of the show, and I still highly advise anyone who is curious about the show to definitely check it out, as it IS one of the best animes I've ever seen. (I saw it all fansubbed ages ago.)
And for those who are already fans of it.. the subtitles are accurate... what else could you really ask for? It's not like the abscense of TOKIO or their opening theme song is going to affect the fun storyline.
OK anyway, there's the report... second hand, but it's still a report.

And if anyone is curious about the dub, you can go here. And judging from the clips...damn! Laura Bailey seriously has talent for sounding cute while talking in a million words per minute.
I'll probably get the first DVD, but judging from the number of episodes for the entire series, I'll wait for boxsets.

Yes, I'm in north america, and I own the first DVD, and the second one's coming the twenty third of this month i think. That really cleared up something for me, I couldnt figure out what they were talking about when Sana ran into that band member, lol! It really is a fun anime! As for Laura Bailey, I could tell it was her in the first few minutes, when she screams when she figures out she's late. That reminded me of Tohru from Fruits Basket, so i knew it was her. And what are dubs?

dubs are when they take out the Japanese dialogue and put in dialogue in another language. That's called dubbing. As in dubbing an audio track over the background and music audio.katelynisspecial wrote:Yes, I'm in north america, and I own the first DVD, and the second one's coming the twenty third of this month i think. Oddly enough, dubbing also used to be the term used for recording from one video or audio tape to another directly.. that was dubbing. Some old tape decks had "high speed dubbing" that could record from tape to tape super fast. I loved it.

The song name is actually "19 O'Clock News". And I'm still disappointed. I like that song.Garylisk wrote:Lastly, the biggest thing, the theme song "16 O'Clock News" by TOKIO is not the opening theme. So do they use the 2nd opening animation or is it the 1st OP with Ultra Relax playing? Because the 2nd opening animation is hilarious.

And yeah, I think they just play the song, and it's still the first opening, because I read that they blackened out the song title and artist name in the opening... but again, this is second-hand. I have not seen it yet.
