Duly noted.

Wow, I guess I never paid attention to the contests before that. No, check that, I didn't pay attention to the ballots - though I think I still have them dating back to 1997 in a box somewhere.

To paraphrase one Mr. Cool James, please refrain from referring to it as a revival, I've been lurking for ages.

From Pyson at the AMV panel on Saturday morning- the contest initially didn't even have categories. Eventually it became obvious that the comedic/upbeat entries were winning consistently, so they split it up so the serious and non-serious were separated. And then the action editors complained the the comedy was always blowing them away, and creators of dramatic videos that sappy, feel-good romance videos were unfairly paired with them. As such, the contest evolved over time into the 5 categories we have now, which seem to have worked pretty well despite some anomalies (trailers, for example, were dodged as a problem by classifying them as fan parodies and not AMVs).

There was not a 'Best of Show' award under Pyson (assuming my memory of this is right) because a) it was assumed- and demonstrated last year quite well- that Comedy would pwn the rest of the categories much of the time, b) it set Otakon apart from most other contests, many of which do have Best of Show awards, and c) not having a 'Best of Show' means 5 editors walk away at the same level- 'Best of Show' makes one person really happy and 4 (usually Best of Show wins its category too) less happy. Honestly I like it better without the Best of Show, and am glad it was decided to go back to the more 'traditional' method this year. It really is hard to fairly compare between all the very different videos, and I think it's better to recognize people for being outstanding compared to videos of a similar intent (romance vs. romance, comedy vs. comedy, etc.)

Haha, people are finally bitching over the whole "mini-videos" amvs now. What kind of monster have I created?
But seriously, the whole AMV Hell thing has been ripped off so many times now that I can't even count them all on my fingers. It has become a genre unto itself. I do kind of agree that its not really fair to lump them in with other comedy videos, because they are really VASTLY different in execution.
For those who are able to make a comedy video that holds a single idea, and you can execute it well, then more power to you. Those types of videos truely are much more difficult to make than a "mini-video" compilation. In fact, that was the major reasoning behind creating amv hell in the first place--It's incredibly difficult to keep a comedy video funny through an entire song... so just use multiple songs and keep it at a fast pace hitting hard and strong.
Although certainly I don't mean to put anyone down for creating a compilation video. After all, my amv career has been revolving entirely around this concept for the entire past year.

Naw, Pro. That way we could have made a 'longest video' category and it would have won. Would have needed another DVD, though.

Can we not encourage people to make amv's that are longer than most episodes of the shows we are watching? 26 Min of Marylin Manson was more than enough for me.

Otakon 2005 Friday Night Blundering!!

Post by LordCochise » Thu Aug 25, 2005 9:54 pm

Granted, it can happen to ANYONE, and my condolences to the poor guy running the XP system the contest was being shown with, but DAMNED if the Friday night showing had a nice big half-hour of retardedness around the 2nd-3rd romantic / Sentimental offering.

For those who joined me, I had flashbacks of Gates' introduction of Win 98 with the infamous BSOD right in the middle of installing some PnP device (<a href="http://www.cnn.com/TECH/computing/9804/ ... ex/">Click here for nostalgic goodness</a>). But eventually, they got back on track amidst much catcalling from the crowd, and DAMNED if the videos this year just blew me away..

Wizarad of Ozaca was a hands-down classis, ditto Real Ninjas, ntyfive, Waka Laka, Naruto Tech beat, and mamimi. All were amazing in their own right - the shift from VHS duping the last time I was at Otakon in 2K1 left me drooling quite a bit..
