Story first, always. If there is no story, or it's boring, I lose interest. Also, I am only interested in certain types of stories. Everyone loves Monster, but that's the kind of story I hate, so I don't watch.
Comedy, but it has to be well placed. I hate it when there's a really dramatic moment and they try to stick a crappy joke in the middle of it. Not that I don't enjoy slapstick every now and then:) Excel Saga rocks.
Other. Visuals I guess? I tend to watch more of the "pretty" anime. Like for example, the art in Pretear is awesome, and the art in DBZ is not.

Monster fails this list on ... the violence part, right? I haven't watched it yet. Keep meaning to.Otohiko wrote:I dream of one day seeing an anime without a storyline, that does not mimic or parody anything, remains entirely un-funny throughout, denies any violence, dispenses with sentiment and consists of an utterly and criminally ugly cast.
My usual key point is decent characterization. I don't like caricatures or stupid motivations. Caricatures you can get away with in comedy, but that's generally not my style of comedy anyway. (It's not necessary, either - AzuDaioh and FLCL both have decent characterization.) It doesn't even have to be deep, just recognizably human. Stupid motivations, where a) you can see that the writers pulled this out of their asses to make the story work for no reason and don't bother to make it make sense or b) the writers haven't seen a real person in 7 years and don't understand how real people work, just... no thanks.
I can put up with a lot of other stuff (like bad animation), and other factors can vary (drama vs. comedy, etc.). That's the key thing.
On the other hand, I will also fall for complete crap for terrible reasons, like Star Ocean EX. I hate it that I like this show. It's awful. Reason? I loved the game. Which is exactly how they expect to reel us in. Gah.

Monster might seem that way on first look, but not at all. Fails that on all points. It's heavily into the storyline, it actually plays with quite a few literary cliches (and tastefully!) and common social/political themes, there's a few "aw"-inducing and amusing moments/characters, it can be pretty darn violent, certainly has its share of sentimental characters, and uh... Nina is pretty, Dieter is cute, and Johann is, well, Johann (blond, blue-eyed 20-year-old... come on).SarahtheBoring wrote:Monster fails this list on ... the violence part, right? And it's still great, if you're into that kind of thing
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Sounds like you want to see an anime version of Sinefeild.Otohiko wrote:Other.

That would be pure art, from my perspective.
Seriously
Had not plot and the story never went any where. Would be interesting to see an anime like you described though.

The art is always a big draw. I have to have some like of how the characters are drawn and their surroundings. This has been the main reason I have kept away from DBZ. Not the story, but the characters as they are drawn do not do it for me.
Story is important too. I like a compelling story and am increasingly demanding for more original stories. Everything these days seems to be a knockoff clone of other stories (even in anime). Give me a twist on an old idea or genre or completely break out of the box.
Music is increasingly becoming important too.
