RahXephon, thoughts... anything?

Post by Declan_Vee » Tue Sep 10, 2002 11:26 am

Over the last month one anime series has generated more walk-outs at AJAS than any other I can think of at the moment. And when you stop and think about it... RahXephon sucks.
and of course the following questions came to my mind when I was typing this...

Does this have a plot, or am I just missing it?
Is this too much like Eva? (something that doesn't need reliving)
Is this even worth watching?
What were the creators planning on acheiving by making the thing sing and not release an album or make a band and get some big mecha sized instruments?

RahXephon fans, Mecha fanboys, Eva fanboys, People from a band that cosplay as mecha when you do live performances, or anyone. Feel free to Flame me, feed me to the bears (I doubt they like how I taste), kick me, lock me in the freezer, or maybe even agree with me.

No, I am not a drunkard.

I only saw episode 1 but I thought it was a big steaming pile of prententious jizz... and not even the brand I like.

I dunno, it just seemed to take itself too seriously.

I heard the music was good.

But only the music...

"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)
"I AM REBORN!" - Dark Schneider Bastard!! OAV

I seen the previews on one of my Dvd's and I remember saying something like "Oh God another Mecha anime" and I left it at that

Oh well it's the stupid moronic evangelion fanboys fault if they miss out on the best series of 2002 and walk out. If they walked out on animes that seem similar to others than they should walk out on Evangelion.

Does this have a plot, or am I just missing it?

Your missing it, it's not really that difficult, you just have to put a little thought into it ;)

Is this too much like Eva? (something that doesn't need reliving)

The question should be is Evangelion too much like Mobile Suit Gundam, Space Runaway Ideon, Aura Battler Dunbine, Megazone 23, Gunbuster, Nadia, Mazinger Z blah blah blah

If you watch animes for originality than don't watch Evangelion because it has none ;)

Is this even worth watching?

Well I said before it's the best anime of 2002 so what do you think my answer is going to be.....

What were the creators planning on acheiving by making the thing sing and not release an album or make a band and get some big mecha sized instruments?

Music is an important part of RahXephon much like Macross, yet somehow it's a complete ripoff of Evangelion even though music isn't that important in it, go figure.....

Well, I saw the first episode and was really confused. Then I heard a description from someone who generally has the same view on comparisions as westlo does and even she said it's too damn close to Eva. And I think the title of the second episode used the same literary work as NerV's subtext for source, which should tell you something. Well, at least the soundtrack is good which is an improvement over its predecessor.

I haven't seen Rahxephon, but then, I'm not really a mecha fan. Eva, I watched because it was the first serious anime series available to me, and I pretty much liked it for it's grittiness (art, plot, etcetera). If Rahxephon is like Eva, then I think Declan hit the nail on the head-most people don't want to relive Eva again if they don't have to.

For me at least, easy and fairly pleasant wins the day. Quirky series (Niea Under 7, Ebichu), funny series (Excel Saga, Azumanga Daioh), and light stuff (Irresponsible Captain Tylor) are all great, in my book. Anyone can add drama (and God knows some series' creators tack on over the top drama because it adds "artistic value"), but it takes work to create series that make you smile and want to rewatch it.
I'm out...
