I think there's something else to note on this subject, which has been bothering me for quite a while.

A lot of shows use nudity or perverted humor in a clever way; either it's funny, or it advances the story in some way. Shows like that might be Tenchi Muyo, for instance. Let's call these type A. Then there are the shows were the fanservice seems to be there simply to get more people to watch the anime and really has little or no point, like in Ikkitousen or Tenjou Tenge (the little I've seen of TT, that is). Let's call this type B. Then there's type C, which would be parodies of shows with fanservice, like Eiken and Puni Puni Poemi.

But there's still another category which hasn't been discussed here yet; the shows that may or may not contain any nudity, but still often somehow manages to come across as more perverted than any of the other types. The best examples of this (type D) that I can think of are Amazing Nurse Nanako and He Is My Master, though even something as innocent (?) as Excel Saga might fit in here. What these shows have in common is that they all convey a very skewd image of the relationships between men and women. Nanako and Excel are basically the same person in that they both would do anything and take any amount of physical abuse in order to please their master, who is a very powerful, dominant, abusive and uncaring male. He Is My Master has similar elements. This image is - naturally - often conveyed much more explicitly in actual hentai, though you can find more and more of it in regular anime nowadays.

Like most people in this thread, I have nothing at all agains type A; you should be able to joke about sex as much as about anything else. I don't care at all for type B; if I want nudity, I'll watch nudity, if I want a good story, I'll watch something with a good story. Type B shows are stuck in the middle. All type C shows I've seen so far have been hilarious.

Now about type D. My reason for generalizing about these shows is that they contain more or less implicit/explicit examples of sexual abuse. This might upset anyone, and doesn't have anything to do with whether you like nudity or not. But what I find most unpleasant about these anime is that they always seem to take for granted that this is something funny. You're supposed to laugh the sixteenth time Izumi gets her clothes ripped off by Pochi or is forced to do something sexually symbolic by Yoshitaka. The same thing happens - although more cleverly disguised - in Nanako and Excel Saga.

No matter if you watch hentai (type X, maybe?) or regular anime, there's always an implicit message in it. What I'm objecting to is when anime - hentai or not - contains the implicit message that it is alright for men to abuse women in order to make themselves feel good and/or powerful. What I'm observing is that this message is often disguised and portrayed as being something humorous, and seems to be becoming more and more accepted as part of regular, non-hentai anime.

(This got more serious than I intended. ^^; Still, I'll stand for it.)

well i cant say much on this but defend my japanese citizenship
WE ARNT PERVERTS LIKE THE FREAKING AMIRICAN (no ofence to you as i also have american citizenship)MASTURABATINGPERVS!!!!we dont CARE (well some of us are pervs but not NEARLY as much as americans) about nudity.we are acoustom to it by age 7. dontget me wrong, i live in california, but EVERYONE IN AMERICA IS A PERV.....well not all girls are but still. and some seriously f** up boys who are mentel and/or w/out internet acsess and/or a real goodie goodie. no offence to mentel boys. i hope we cool. anywaythe point is STOP BEING IMMATURE/PERVERTED/ or just continue the watch it but not jack off to it and not stareing at it .

Going with the assumption that you haven't (at least not for an extended period of time), just because you live in an area with a perverted population doesn't mean that the rest of the country is perverted.

I really don't think you got the point to this thread. No one was talking about guys watching and jacking off to it. And no one was talking about masturbation either! Perverts are everywhere. It's not just an American phenomenon, nor is it just a Japanese phenomenon. Perhaps Japanese culture allows the Japanese to be accustomed to nudity by age 7. That doesn't mean there are no perverts in Japan. And I highly doubt that Japanese men all refrain from masturbation. But not everyone in America is a pervert either.

Sheesh, generalize much? I live in California, and I can assure you that not EVERYONE here is a perv.

that's what I've always thought... but then again... I don't see it doing to bad atm, sex sells, dude! I get pissed at shows like Nanako, but I see nothing wrong with the occasional shot of Abelia in her underwear or Ms. Elfen Leid naked even ;p if ya got it flaunt it, but boobie jokes (as a centerpeice) are SO passe!
