The main theme will be funerals.

My suggestion would be

"Silence" by Grave digger. It's to be found on the album called "the grave Digger". It's a ballad although Grave Digger usually play heavy metal

Well, I was about to suggest 'Bittersweet', but then you said no Apocalyptica.... hehe.

'Aozora', from Air, is definitely a good sad song... but of course in Japanese.

The final song from Beethoven's Last Night, Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Can't for the life of me remember what it's called. 'A New Dream' perhaps?
