Naruto: Fillers till 2006
Don't know if anyone else heard about it, but right after the fight between Naruto and Sasuke ended, there was supposed to be a small young Kakashi saga then go straight to 2 and a half years later. Since Kishimoto and the Naruto studio in Japan are dumb, they decided to just give us filler episodes until January 2006.
What do you guys think about this. To tell you the truth, I'm kinda happy. I think the story of Naruto is too straight forward. Itachi, Hokage, Akutski, Ninetails.....what happened to the D, C, B, A missions dammit!! Akutski of Hokage of Ninetails must get! Bull!! I loved when they went on their first mission and fought Zabuza, the best part of Naruto in my opinion. Stuff would happen so random I wouldn't expect it. Maybe I'm just being brainwashed by the new intro song "which I love". I dunno.

Nobody minded Ranma or Dragonball Z.
But anyway, I can understand why they're doing it; you can't just charge ahead, catch up to, and then pass over the Manga. It's either they bite the bullet and make filler episodes until they're far enough behind the comic that they can then start following its story again, or they make up their own story and hear people constantly bitching that "THEY DIDN'T FOLLOW THE STORY!!! THAT ISN'T SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN!!!"
Believe me, to a screenwriter, the latter is infinitely more annoying than the prior. So, yeah, fillers suck, but blame it on the studio executives who wait for only 18 months to pass before they start making the show (studio executives on either side of the ocean are exactly the same: moronic assholes).

But in that case, the anime diverged pretty far from the manga almost immediately (because of its "experimental" nature), so I doubt very many people care.Malificus wrote:Unless it's Excel Saga.Scintilla wrote:Thank you, I was hoping someone would mention this.EmilLang1000 wrote:But anyway, I can understand why they're doing it; you can't just charge ahead, catch up to, and then pass over the Manga.

I was wondering when the filler was going to end. I don't like filler, but I do perfer it to a complete divergence of the manga and anime storys. I think its interesting that a weekly anime series moves so much faster then a weekly manga. Before I got into this hobby, I would've thought the opposite would have been true.

Action mangas, by their nature, require only a few big panels to tell what exactly is going on. There's substantially less dialogue than in a Comedy, and so much of the story relies on the fight sequences that take up perhaps only one to three panels per page. In many cases, a single panel takes up two pages by itself.
So when all is said and done, it comes out to be that an average 18-page Action-based Manga will probably take three chapters to tell a single 24-minute TV episode. Comedies vary, sometimes a single chapter may be one episode, other times entire volumes can be thrown into only two or three episodes (Look at Ranma; the first season of 18 episodes comprised the first 3 volumes only... later seasons would see an entire volue being compressed into a single episode
).
A single 18-page chapter of Naruto takes me perhaps 7 to ten minutes to read; Love Hina, on the other hand, takes me maybe an entire half-hour to read just one chapter of the same length! It's all in the amount of dialogue, number of panels, and pacing of the story.
So, when you really think about it, it isn't so odd that Action animes move that much more quickly than the comics; still, there's another reason why they shuold've waited a whole three years or so to make the show. But execs are greedy bastards that love to jump on the bandwagon and tear the heart and soul out of whatever's popular as soon as possible (and I have to work with these people later... pity me
).

Or they can go with the third option that no one in Japan ever utilizes; breaking up the series into actual seasons. Rather than just make one episode after another week after week from the series beginning to end, the production studio can take breaks every 26th or so episode. Sure, fanboys will piss and moan about how they didn't get their weekly fix of a brand new episode for a while, but it would all be for the better. The downtime between seasons would allow the manga to advance even further, studios can take time on a series to make it come out better and finally, the studio can use all of the combined sales from merchandizing and add it all to the animation budget, resulting in a new season of episode that looks so much better than the last. It's a mystery to me why no one in Japan has considered doing this.EmilLang1000 wrote:It's either they bite the bullet and make filler episodes until they're far enough behind the comic that they can then start following its story again, or they make up their own story and hear people constantly bitching that "THEY DIDN'T FOLLOW THE STORY!!! I don't mind a filler saga or two, but they are getting too off of the main storyline. I mean, Naruto trains for two and a half years, leaving only half a year left to rescue Sasuke. There' no way they can go that long with as many fillers as there have been. They're probably going to have to knock half a year to a year of of his training.
Not to mention, the filler sagas have been getting kind of lame. Seriously, a saga about a guy who likes to bury people alive isn't all that interesting.
Point is, I would rather have them stop showing episode for a few months rather than have the show continued to be cluttered up with fillers. After all, in about 30 or so episodes after they resume the main storyline, chances are fillers will emerge once again.
