Lol. I think that the whole Geostigma thing would have went over my head if hadnt read anything about it online. It just didnt seem that clear cut to me, either that or my Japanese is horrible, lol.

It's definitely true that this movie presupposes a lot of knowledge of the original game. Maybe a little too much. I had a few friends watch it who knew nothing about FF7, and they made me sit down with them and narrate the *entire* story of the game so they could understand the movie...

it is a pure fanservice movie after all. I wouldn't torture anyone to see it if they didn't know anything about ff7.

Embarassing? How so? They hadn't played the game and didn't know much beyond "Aeris dies".

It just took a while when they started the, "Who's this character? What's his/her story?"

Then they watched the movie, and AFAIK, they all seemed to enjoy it...

Not for you or them, just for the movie. In the explanation that was given they should have IMO, been more clear. I dont know, like Serenity, I had never seen the series but the movie still was clear and good enough to stand on its own y'know. I think that because it was so fan based made it kinda alienates others. I wouldnt really want that for my movie but something like that is really hard when you dont want to change the main story.

Yeah, I know what you mean. AC really is alienating who can watch it with a full understanding, by relying so heavily on the game. I wouldn't really call it embarassing though, since SE fully knew that was what they were doing, and repeatedly said that their intention was to make the movie for the fans. This is why it was initially slated for DVD release only and then only had a very small run in Japanese theatres.

If I had made the movie, I would have tried to make it a little more clear to people who haven't played FF7, especially explaining who Zack was and the like (everyone was like, "Hey, who's that guy?") I just wouldn't really call it "embarassing" per se since it was SE's intention to make the movie so that it only appealed to a very niche market.
