Anime in 5 to 10 year...

Something came to my attention not too long ago. It was that anime has become exponentially more popular than just a few years ago. More shows on tv. More DVDs in stores. More video games for our consoles. More movies in movie theatres. Within a very short time, anime is making itself a household name.

Remember when the only DVDs you could find in a movie store were Ghost in the Shell and Ninja Scroll? Maybe Princess Mononoke if you were lucky. Remember when the only anime on tv was basically Dragon Ball Z, Pokémon and Sailor Moon? Remember when anime was nestled somewhere in the Sci-fi or special interest sections in movie stores? Remember when it became a journey simply to find a single manga somewhere in Chapters (Indigo book stores)?

I have a feeling the next decade, or even half a decade will be a very interesting time in the world. Things could slow down. Anime could become main stream. Anime might even disappear like a bad fad (most unlikely). It kinda boggles the mind. ~_^

Really, the last 10-15 yrs it has exploded. Heck in Rochester there is now a store dedicated just to Anime. Beats importing the LDs that we did in the 90s. I never expected it to be the way it is now...I have no idea what the heck it will look like in the next 10 yrs. All I know is I love it!

I think people slightly underestimate the relative popularity of anime before - although getting it was indeed harder.

The big change, I think, is probably the new technologies. Fansubs are way easier to get; DVD's are getting cheaper by the day... It's easier for anime to get exposure without getting too too mainstream.

We'll see what happens. But I think what's going on has less to do with the fanbase and more with accessibility.

DBZ, Pokemon, and Sailor Moon were the only things on like 7 years ago. It hasn't been that long. Anime has taken off since then and even before then. I think the anime industry can only keep growing.

Where was this sad situation? There was alot more than that.

It seems that manga (the big thick copies) has been hoing through a fasrter version. Just a few years ago, there were a max of twelve books anywhere, now there are hundreds. and more are released at a faster rate than before.

It has shot up in popularity. Part of that popularity has to go to Cartoon Network. After showing G-Force, Speed Racer, and Robotech, it also aired Sailor Moon, Outlaw Star, and, probably the most important one, Dragonball Z. I helped start the Anime club at my middle school, and its effects carried over to the high school.

Another part is probably the fact that Michael Eisner has put Disney farther into the hole than Ron Jeremy... in light of the terrible strand of Disney animated movies in the past few years, and the increased amount of Japanese animation in theatres.

I don't know how many of my friends went "how can you like Anime," until I showed them Princess Mononoke. After that, their reaction was something along the lines of "

oh my friggin jesus-loving God... I'm never watching Disney again."

WHAT? I'm sorry. Only Pokemon has been on American television for 7 years. Sailor Moon was on for about 6 and DBZ I'm not entirely sure. I was just saying that it hasn't been that long ago but that anime has taken off in popularity.

yeah, popularity has definitely skyrocketed

and as we can see with ones like Appleseed, it is not only becoming more popular but is evolving as well

I agree. I mean anime has been around forever. I was born in 1987 so I'm not an expert on the much older anime, but what I'm saying is that animation styles are evolving especially now with the involvement of computers and computerized movies as the one mentioned above.

I dont think "evolving" is the corect word. Evolution means improvement. Sure most of the pretier anime I've seen have bein made after 2000, but they dont allways result in things being "better". Sometimes I find simpler, less "refined" animation to have more of a charm than high levels of detail. Berserk is a perfect example. As is the unreleased track in the original fantasia (its on the dvd). It has an old, crusty sort of charm that makes it feel alot warmer than it would have if made using modern technology.
