AMVs mentioned on TWiT

Post by DeinReich » Tue Oct 25, 2005 6:29 am

This Week in Tech (TWiT) mentioned AMVs in a discussion on copyright laws and Creative Commons use on their last episode. It was only for about 30 seconds, but I thought I'd point that out.

I hope they didn't attempt to associate AMVs with the Creative Commons. That'd be a slap in the face to the Creative Commons' mission.

(disclaimer:

This is not an insult towards AMVs. If you think it is, pull your head out of your ass.)

They didn't, that was just what the topic was when they brought up AMVs, mainly saying that is asinine that what we do, along with other fan made video creations (Red vs. Blue was also mentioned), are illegal.

For some reason, I remember RvB being officially sanctioned by Microsoft and/or Bungie, which would remove a great number of legal obstacles. The site doesn't seem to say anything about that, though.

It's episode 27 located here. The AMV stuff starts at around 19:28.

(I'm not sure who's speaking here. Perhaps Lawrence Lessig?)
"In addition to that, there's extraordinary ... creativity. Do you know about the AMV culture? This is fascinating. There's this thing called 'anime music video' culture... 100,000 kids, mainly Americans, who record all of the anime series that they can, and then they re-edit it, setting it to music or setting it to video trailers, and so they have these extraordinary productions, all, you know, made on their old iMacs up in their bedrooms that are extraordinarily creative, but it's all taken, found work, and it's all ... it's not legal at all."

yea, he'd be suprised when he figures out half of us are... 25 year olds who grew out of videogames (some not o.0) and are basically, the next generation in movie producer/ director/ staff or at least digital imaging. Not saying we'll all go that route, not saying we all came from that route, just the majority of us... AFAIK.
