Unfortunately, I think the newer series are going out to try to rope in the standard american audience that just want to see panties and sh!t blowing up. Though amusing, it has its limitations, especially when you really need to see a meaningful and reasonably plotted(?) anime. I think that anime still needs to get some more popularity with the general public before we will see high quality shows coming out on a more regular basis. We will just have to wait and watch like we always have, weather the storm of crap, and then we can finally see the full potential of our visual pasttime.
The most expedient way to avert crisis is always by the indiscriminate extinction of anything that stands in your way.

Now Japanese animation studios are realizing that they can make more money overseas in markets like North America. It used to be that we got only the most acclaimed of series or movies, now we are getting stuff that is.... maybe not worth our investment of time or money.
I remember an executive at ADV Films talking about getting the Evangelion movies. The price offered to them was so high, he said that they could have bought the rights to ten other series for the cost of the two Eva films. How many series that would not have seen the light of day a few years ago are now being pushed as prime stuff?

Future
Ya, who knows where things will go.
And ya, I suppose I was exaggerating when I said 5 years, but you get the general idea.
It's unfortunate, but the internet has been playing a huge role widening the scope of anime fans. I know so many people who are starting into anime simply because they've been hooked one show (like a friend of mine and "Bleach").

I've only been around for 18 years!!!!! So I wouldn't know much, but I guess evolving wasn't the right word. I mean anime is anime, it's all drawing just with different styles so I guess there isn't necessarily improvement. But I agree that sometimes more simple anime can be better than anime that looks good but may not have a good storyline.bum wrote:I dont think "evolving" is the corect word. Evolution means improvement. Sure most of the pretier anime I've seen have bein made after 2000, but they dont allways result in things being "better". Sometimes I find simpler, less "refined" animation to have more of a charm than high levels of detail. Berserk is a perfect example. As is the unreleased track in the original fantasia (its on the dvd). It has an old, crusty sort of charm that makes it feel alot warmer than it would have if made using modern technology.

It's important to remember that Anime is a primarly visual art and a series with great art and a crappy story will always preform much better than a well written story with horrible art.prettysoldiersailormoon wrote: I've only been around for 18 years!!!!! Sad but true yet another example of style winning over substance in this screwed up world of ours
