9 times out of ten, I prefer the manga to the show; there tends to be more depth to them, given that they're a form of literature, and can get away with explaining more and having longer dialogue, whereas shows and movies are visual, and demand less dialogue and more physicality.
Nine times out of ten, though... in some cases, the shows are a far improvement over the manga (FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST), especially if the show came first; again, though, this isn't always the case, and there are some comics that are vastly better than the show (EVANGELION).
