Ok, I won't get on how John Williams doesn't make music, he arranges music... but never mind.
Hmm instrumental is a tough question, and it brings up the question What is an instrument? Is not the throat singing of the Inuit music yet they use their breath? Could the human voice be considered an instrument? Like in Navajo style singing, or for a more modern example Sigur Ross? Only if it's Vocables or do lyrics count too? The Opera singer is certainly an important part of the Orchestra's soundscape is s/he not?
Just something to think about...
Anyways I digress, and the answer would have been Clint Mansell's Requiem tracks, except I've been hearing it EVERYWHERE so it's kinda annoying me now.
I'll Say Beethoven's moonlight sonata.

What do you mean by making music? He composes music and he conducts it too. All 3 of my Harry Potter cds say that he composed the music and 2 say he conducted it. So unless you're going to explain what you mean by he doesn't make music...I don't care what he does, he makes music and it rocks!requiett wrote:Way to tell the difference between composing and arranging.Fall_Child42 wrote:Ok, I won't get on how John Williams doesn't make music, he arranges music... but never mind.

I think the John Williams making vs. arranging bit was a joke, ie. he rearranges his own previous work to make new soundtracks, the punchline being that's why all his work sounds the same. I personally think Williams is played out, as well as Kamen and Shore to lesser degrees.
Also, I think the "what is an instrument" bit had a little validity. The voice is technically a musical instrument, though Flint's definition counts it out of the running for obvious reasons. But is a computer an instrument? A turntable? Tape loops? One could count an entire d'n'b set as an instrumental piece, or one of Merzbow's more recent laptop-based noise works, or certain musique concret pieces by Karlheinz Stockhausen, which are composed entirely of tape manipulations but feature recordings of human voices.
Maybe the original topic is a bit too broad?

*Sigh* Actually yes it was kind of a joke on John Williams music sounding the same but it was also a jab at him tending to rip off ... mabey rip off is too strong a phrase ... so I'll go with "be Heavily Influenced" by other composers and works.Unpronounceable_Symbol wrote: I think the John Williams making vs. arranging bit was a joke, ie. he rearranges his own previous work to make new soundtracks, the punchline being that's why all his work sounds the same.
The single most famous and notable example is the comparison between The Imperial march, and Holsts Mars (From Holsts the planets)
Some lesser Star Wars examples include Dvorak's 9th, and Wagner's Ring series.
And more reacently, (and i also think more shamelessly) John Williams has been "Heavily influenced" by Danny Elfman ¦:/
As for the Instrument, thing, I wasn't looking for a dictionary definition, I was just trying to encourage some talk about what truly constitutes an Instrument, and thus what makes an instrumental?
