A newbie's thought's on anime music videos in general
Now as the title suggests I'm new to this, but I've watched a couple flics and it appears to me that anime music videos are just a bunch of random, really really short fragments of animes cobbled together to make a video that matches the rythm of the music. Of course plenty of the good ones add colour effects, clipping and other such tomfoolery, but all in all, that's all they are. And I do recognize that they tell little stories, like "that guy wants this girl but he can never get her" - but how are you going to make an interesting movie about something that can be fully expressed in just one sentence. Music videos aren't supposed to match the music, at least not as closely as most anime music videos do. So, does anyone know of any music vids around here that are more like music videos, and less like winamp visualizations?

...what have you been watching, first of all?
I mean, that's an awful generalization. I find that (unlike many 'actual music videos'), many good AMVs are excellently composed and delivered.
But again... what is it that you're basing this on?
Anyway, check out some vids of your thematic choice here: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/phpBB/v ... m.php?f=41

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Throw out any ideas about music videos you may have gained from watching live-action music videos. In most cases, they will not apply here.
This post makes me sad, but I won't write something lengthy and well-thought out because I need sleep.
I will, however, give some recommendations.
First of all, it sounds like you could use some good comedy videos.
I recommend <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... 66">Senshi on Springer</a>, <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... v=23949">I Wish I Was a Lesbian</a>, and <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... =1476">The Hell That Is Keitaro's Life</a>, among others.
Secondly, have you tried trailers?
I'm fond of <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... Obligatory Eva Trailer</a>, <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... 2292">Kill Il</a>, and <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... 1">Pokemon Never Die</a>, among others.
Thirdly, for a video that does an awfully good job of telling a story (in this case, one that never actually happened in either anime), I suggest <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... 3">Tainted Donuts</a>.
For videos that match the flow and mood (notice I didn't say rhythm) of the music excellently, I recommend <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... ">Engel</a> (I remember seeing this many years ago and feeling like the song was just MADE for the video, it was that good) and <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... hp?v=33732">... and forever (dreaming)</a>.
For a good video that actually kind of resembles a live-action music video in style, I suggest <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... 7649">What It Means To Be Young</a>.
Then there's the realm of things like alternate openings (e.g. <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... 113">Utena Daioh</a>, <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... 142">Cruel Dolem's Thesis</a>, and my own <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... >Alternate Eva Opening: Eva Bebop</a>), and even videos that consist entirely of original drawings/animation (e.g. <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... 3701">Once Upon a Time at the Bus-Stop</a>, a highly underrated video).
I hope these give you some idea of the wide, wide range of ideas that's out there in the AMV world.

I'm happy to see I got a bunch of replies, so I'm going reply to them one by one.
To Otohiko:
I started of watching two videos a close bud recommended to me. Those were "I wish I was a lesbian" which I liked a lot although I don't feel that the anime adds terribly much to the song, even though it is very well done and is a good visual addition, and well, I forgot the name of the second, the filename is SuberunkerStudeosh-Football(HQ).mpg. That one was funny enough to watch once, but after the novelty of it passes it's just annoying crap. After that I watched some videos from the top of the top 10% list, namely Whisper of the beast, Euphoria and Naruto's Technique Beat (those incidentally are the top 3) and I felt all three of them were totally random rubbish with loads of eye candy but annoyingly short transitions and little interesting content. I am aware another discussion going on on the boards about good movies receiving lower ratings than crappy Naruto Rock movies, so I'll be going through the suggestions you linked to.

I don't want to throw all ideas I've had about music videos I have had. That's one aspect of anime music videos that sickens me, it appears that, and many of the amv banners communicate this, the goal of the amv community is to be as different as possible. Different than what? It doesn't matter! Regardless of that, thanks a lot for your hand picked recommendations, I'll certainly go through them when have time for musing. Hope you have a good night's sleep.
And to Kthulhu let it be known, that he who uses the word newbie as an insult, feels it necessary to call people trolls to confirm his superiority and calls me a lesbian hermaphrodite (which is stupid because the terms that describe sexual orientation are hard to apply to hermaphrodites) evoces nothing in me put upright pity.

Well why don't we use Citizen Kane then? And anyway, why is Citizen Kane always regarded as such a great movie, I heard it was mindnumbingly boring.
