The focus of romantic anime, and romance in anime in general

Post by arzuro » Sat Nov 05, 2005 8:13 pm

It seems to me that most animes deal with being rejected a lot, and most of them end when the two main characters finally become a couple after oh so many mishaps. Is this a false observation? Are there anime that show an actual relationship, not just somewhere along the plot as in "shinji is rei's boyfriend, now he will get into this huge robot and blast the living daylights out of an alien/monster/demon/enemy robot/an evil clone", but where the relationship is actually a vital part of the plot? And what about being left by a long term partner (not him or her being eaten by zombies or ninjas, mind you) and the consequences? Are there anime that cover that? Not trying to be sarcastic. I would'nt normally point this out, but I need to be careful.

Well, it largely depends on the anime in question.

Look at this thread here:

I think there's a variety of things. I don't think rejection is the main one. As always, the big one is the whole "victims of circumstance" thing, from what I see. He loves, she loves, the world says no (or something explodes and kills people, etc.) - that sort of deal.

But there's a good deal of things which deal with a variety of relationships. Take KareKano, for one - to me, it seems like a cross-section of a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship more than anything.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Yeah, victims of circumstance is a really big topic, probably the biggest. Although most of the anime that have that theme start with a lot of rejection to show what a loser dweeb the hero is. I'm sorta interested in an anime that's about breaking up. Not because the guy slept with his girlfriends mother or something that happens in chat shows. I sorta want a real world thing. A friend of mine watches pretty much anything that comes out in terms of anime, and he's really big on this touchy feely stuff, and although I don't usually watch that stuff, he keeps trying, and he never mentioned anything like what I'm looking for. I had my fingers crossed, hoping you'd reply to this post.

Read Boys Be.

It covers a lot of different types of romance.

I'm not looking for a lot of different types. What I'm looking for is very specific. Also I don't read manga anymore, I like anime because it leaves me partially free to do other stuff.

Of course I rarely do, but that's beside the point entirely.

Boys Be is also an anime.

Paradise Kiss is being made into an anime as well. If it's anything like the manga, it'll be excelent. Try it, no rejection, and nobody fights any Giant Robots or Monsters.

It's not like I don't like giant monsters, especially with the tentacles and... erm... but they don't exactly call that romance, do they. >_>

Anyway thanks for the pointer, will check it out when it comes out. Despite the fact that the title yells lame.
