It's not so much an anime version of Monte Cristo as a sort of...

I'd compare it to a richly-decorated and tastefully exaggarated stage production more than to a film. It's very theatrical, takes place in the future, and uses a very sophisticated art style. Though it's a "bastardization" in the sense that it makes its own story out of Monte Cristo.
(I really recommend it by the way, easily the best series to come out in the last year. Check out tyler's Sweet Revenge video for reference).

As far as Dantes, who is really the villain? What he's doing, all in all, is just revenge to people who've betrayed him and, for all purposes, counted him for dead 20 years prior. But "Gankutsuou" really elevates him to the role of villain and emphasizes the dilemma, since it's really set from the perspective of Albert, the son of the Count's main target. There's really some great drama of broken trust going on in the mid-late series. And of course, "Gankutsuou" puts what initially seems a seemingly absurd twist on the original story, but which really changes the whole idea of who the Count actually is (no spoilers, but it interprets who the Prisoner of Chateau d'If was in a rather interesting way).
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I will have to have a look at this. Funny, I always thought Dante was the hero.

Yea, and I mean, if you think hard enough into it... he is just the same in Gankutsuou. But not when the series is set from the perspective of a naive and innocent teenager who gets wrapped up in his plans and whose trust he betrays for his main cause, things get interesting.

Another interesting idea:

Does anyone else besides me see Haruko from FLCL as, basically, a villain?

She is. Falt out. Like Amarao said, Haruko is just as bad a Medical Mechanica. She doesn't care about Earth, Naota, or even Atomsk. She just wants his power, and Naota to use Atomsk's power. She changes her way in the anime a little*, but In the manga, stays the same, with Naota chasing after her still.

Saying that Haruko was a villain would be confirming that she was a character. I will never.

For someone so anal about what talent is, your fairly lose on your idea of character.

In a nurses outfit. And there's really no need to quote a post that's right above your own.
