Wired magazine has a brief article about "music recommendation services". There's a list of these that I'll pass on:

Pandora - free 10 hr trial, then $36 per year

Musicstrands - free

Soundflavor (beta) - free

Last.FM - free or upgrade for $3 per month (review)

no downloads of course, but its still good stuff

You can only download songs which our collaborating labels have enabled for free download. Otherwise music is only streamed from Last.fm, there is currently no pay-for-download service.

Last.fm is actually a really good reference. I found a lot of good shit through them.

Most of the time I try to find bands that I like from places like "pandora" they usually give me crappy bands like:

The site just referred me back to the same artist with different albums... not very helpful i was hoping for other artists with similar music beats
