Which anime would you consider mandatory viewing?

Honestly I cannot name one anime that deserves a mandatory viewing. Most of the shows other people have mentioned have put me to sleep.
Anyway the closiest one I can think of is Vision of Escaflowne. This show has a great story, great animation, and great characters. It's an all around great show.
The two main things that will turn off someone is the long noses and Hitomi's realistic personality *typical whiny teenage girl*.
