Introduction...[what to show to people new to anime]

Post by older_gohan » Sun Nov 13, 2005 1:42 am

Well this sparked my itnerest. All of us know anime pretty well. Have a good idea what's good and whats not. I'm going set up a scenario.

Lets say you have a good friend who has never seen anime in their entire life. Never read much nor heard much about it except little bits from yourself. The have told you many times they will never watch anime. Finnaly after a while they agree. They told you that they will give you ONE chance to get them into anime. You can either show a movie or four complete episodes of one particular series. Which anime would you choose and why?

So here it is, discuss.

Berserk's a good set up I think but when they finish I think they probably wouldn't watch anymore. With a movie you are able to deal to a wide range of audience without any strings attached.

DBZ got me and most of my friends hooked and I'd show the worlds strongest

Any thing by Miyazaki works. I started my parents off on Spirited Away and they thought is was just another Disney film until it started. They've been wanting to see more of his stuff since then. :D

Oh! My Goddess is also a good choice. It got my sisters hooked.

Wouldn't this depend in large part on what the friend is like? A friend who's into sci-fi, for example, probably wouldn't care too much for Fruits Basket, but they might love Ghost in the Shell. But then another friend may hate GITS and get turned off of anime forever. I guess I'd have to try hard to find a series that appeals to the largest possible market, and so far, I've had the best luck with FMA because of its mix of action, drama, comedy, etc.

I think that's a huge key factor.

So its iether Ninja Scroll or Grave of the Fireflies. That should be a sinple decigion, from then on you slowly build them up to the one you didnt choose. By slowly I mean give it at least a year.
