short short people

Post by beau kang » Tue Nov 15, 2005 7:43 pm

I was wondering how many different animes there are out there that have a character(s) that don't like being called short. I know of Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist and Yahiko from Rurouni Kenshin, but I was wondering if there are any others out there. Please let me know.

Thanks!

I was asking in a cosplay forum (elsewhere) who I could cosplay because Im very short and they suggested Lina Inverse from Slayers (I think... fix if I'm wrong) And Rukia from Bleach.

I hope that helps :)

There're some short jokes at Hiei's (Yu Yu Hakusho) expense, iirc...

Awesome. The reason why I ask is because I'm thinking about making a video about short people to "Short Short Man" (Yes, I know what the song is really implying). I've been playing around with the idea as far as Ed and Yahiko are concerned and figured it would be better if I had a couple of other characters in there as well.

I know a lot of characters hate being called "little," as in young (in Yahiko's case, as well as Shippou's, they hate being referred to as children). In Yu-Gi-Oh!, especially the first series (not Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist, the first one they never showed in America, due to Yami's *ahem* violent tendencies), they comment on the fact that he's so small he looks like a gradeschooler.

In Ranma 1/2, Ranma and Akane's teacher, Miss Hinako, doesn't like it when people call her a child (which, of course, she is).

Jim Hawking from Outlaw Star has had more than one argument with Gene over his height and age.

It's never been an issue, but Meryl Strife from Trigun is a dwarf among giants (Vash, about 7'0", Millie, about 6'3", Wolfwood, about 6'8", Meryl, about 5'0").

There are a boatload of others, I'm sure, but I can't think of any off the top of my head right now. There's something to be said about the Japanese's depiction of even 5'10" being unnaturally tall, but several animes that feature both Japanese and European characters do make reference to their obvious height difference (Eva, for instance; of the five children, Asuka is obviously the tallest, because she's 1/4 German, even though at 14 she should be shorter than any of the males, Touji especially).

Do you only want male characters? I know it doesn't specifically relate to being short, but to being young, but Chiyo-chan in Azumanga Daioh has some funny seasons where she tells students in lower grades to call her sempai. She's 10-12 (depending on the part of the series) but is in high school, and gets the "aww what a cute kid" treatment a lot, and those scenes show she doesn't like it. And of course, since she's so young, she's shorter than EVERYONE.

Yeah, unfortunatly for Chiyo-chan, since the song says "Don't want no short, short man," I'm going to have to use short males. Thanks for the suggestion though.

That isn't the official standing. Officially he's 72 Ins tall (not inches, but actually Ins, their system of measurement), and some people take this to mean 72 inches, or 6 feet. However, considering how he TOWERS over everyone else, and the bulk of the people AREN'T Japanese, but European, it seems unlikely that 6 feet would be very big; an equally large group take it to mean 7'2", which, assuming the characters are meant to be westerners more than Japanese, makes a hell of a lot more sense, especially when you compare Vash's and Meryl's height (Meryl being accepted to be about 5-foot even)...

Fullmetal Alchemist is actually very good when it comes to official heights. Mustang, if I remember correctly, is listed as 5'11", and is by no means the tallest character around; in fact, he seems to be on the short end of medium height, when you compare him to the other men in his command.

Samurai Champloo has an episode, number 3 or 4 if I remember correctly, which features a Dutchman who stands at least a head taller than everyone else (yes, the Japanese actually made fun of their own height at that point); you may want to use that somehow.
